Decided to join the DK2 revolution.

After much Uhmming and Ahhhing over waiting for a consumer release, which I know will happen the day after I click buy, I have finally decided to go for a DK2.
Now I run into another problem, I could be patient and order from the US (£230 ish + shipping/import) or buy off ebay.
Now on ebay, they appear to be selling for silly money! cheapest buy it now is £420 (unless I drive to Birmingham), and ending soonest on auction is already at £360.

So, should I buy new and wait a few weeks, bid on auction, or is there another forum where I can pick up a used rift without paying over the odds?

Cheers for any advice.

I can't really offer you any advice but I can give you something to consider. There is talk on the internet about how easy it is to scratch the lenses of a DK2. I bought mine pretty late in the day and I have never had any hassles with scratches. The problem with this not being a controlled experiment means that I don't know if they improved the lenses in later batches or if I've just been careful with my cleaning. I do wipe them rather a lot though.

I was one of the very lucky ones who received my DK2 in the 1st batch (Could have sold it for 5x the price I paid) but nothing on earth would have made me after I tried it for the 1st time. Lenses are still fine, might have a few micromarks on them but nothing that effects the OH MY GIDDY AUNT factor that ED and the DK2 gives you.

Nice one! I'm now heading over to the Oculus website to see if they've made any announcements about the CV1 :)

Once you enter this collective you will never go back. I simply dont want to play any game now without DK2 after experiencing DK2 and ED. Its like getting off a horse and driving off a top of the line Mercedes-Benz.
DK2 may still be in development, but it good enough for most of the things ED has to offer. I highly recommend you change your settings to this config:

<MatrixRed> 0.18, 0, -1 </MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen> -1, 1, -1 </MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue> 0.15, 0.32, 1 </MatrixBlue>

Thanks for the HUD advice John.
I will probably be an active member of this subforum, leeching you all for hints and tips!
I bet it will be a long while before I have any VR advice to offer as I'm a complete beginner to this, not gamed this Century until Elite was released!

I think my system should cope (i7 5820k, 16GB DDR4, Gigabyte GTX-970, SSD), but I might SLI the GTX if things are not running fast enough after following all the guidance available here.

My best advance is going to be is to have PATIENCE. Plenty of trial and error until I got to a point where I was satisfied to stop tinkering with the settings to enjoy the game.

One thing....

Don't freak out at the apparent resolution. Its magnifying a small screen, you WILL see pixels. My first thirty minutes with the rift was "man this looks like crap" (it also didn't help I didn't know the hud thing).

But its weird, your mind "adjusts" after a while, I don't even see the screen door look now unless I try to, and now trying to play on my 27" gaming monitor is just so.... meh. The rift has ruined me for non-rift games.

Probably not relavant to the OP anymore, but if anyone else comes across this: I ordered mine on the 14th of jan and received it the 23rd.

Buy a new one from Oculus. As said above, delivery is actually very good and you wont have to worry about getting a potentially dodgy unit from Ebay.

Welcome to the club, it takes a little getting used to but viewing on a monitor will never feel the same again. :)

Steph, as far as I remember there are no taxes or custom charges.
Oculus imports them and sends them within EU. Very pleasant.

You have to be careful with the lenses, they scratch from being cleaned and if you have glasses you need to build some sort of protection to avoid contact. It's not a big thing but if you don't do that you'll have the lenses damaged soon.
You receive 2 pair of identical lenses btw, so you have a replacement ready.

The HUD change is one of the most important things you can do for Elite, without you will have difficulties with immersion because text is unreadbale. However if you add DSR and the green mod you will have a nice experience and text is clearly visible.
Just avoid the resource extraction points, those are not compatible with DK2 at this point.

IIRC there is or was a UK distribution centre on the 1st batch at least.

Congrats to those who have joined us whos ghast has been well and truly flabbered by the DK2 & ED. :D

Thanks for all the suggestions, I snagged on on ebay for £300.
If I had known Oculus had UK distribution I would have bought new, wrongly assumed USA export, customs charges and a long wait!

So, my ebay seller very kindly paid extra for a Sat delivery as he missed the SD cutoff yesterday.
Other than HUD colour change which I did last night, what preparation can I make to my system for it's arrival, which does not require it to be plugged in?
