Decisions Decisions Decisions

I am currently planning a long exploration trip that will take me to Beagle Point (eventually) and have two ships that I am thinking of using. My Anaconda seems like the obvious choice, but I recently was on the Azophi Expedition with my DBX and was considering that as a good vessel. Are the slight advantages of the Anaconda worth it? I am looking to perhaps try and push further then Beagle as well if that factors in at all. Thank you in advance!

Anaconda: Long range (you can get it easily up to 64 Ly) but sluggish performance in supercruise. Lots of internals. Big fuel scoop.
DBX: Long range (you can get it easily up to 58 Ly) and good performance in supercruise. Limited internals but enough for one AFMU. Small fuel scoop.

Ultimately both ships can get you to Beagle and beyond. Try them both and see which one is the one you want to stay exploring on a long trip. Make this your decision, because you will have to live with it for a long time.

I had that decision to make a couple of months ago. So I went out for a walk while mulling it over. I passed by the stations Saud Kruger show room (they have nice coffee) for a nosey and took a test flight in a Dolphin.

I liked it so much I kitted it out and set off for Colonia/SagA* & Beagle the next day.

You won't regret it, take a Dolphin.

I've heard good things about the Dolphin, but will it have the range to take me beyond Beagle? If i was just going to Beagle, I would have taken my Beluga. Seeing that the Anaconda has slightly more range, I may take that... I do like like the idea of luxury and maneuverability in SC though... Might look at that ship...

You and her will be out there together for an extended period of time. Make sure to take the ship of your choice out for a short spin around the block (4-8kly) before committing to the long trip. A few additional ly are irrelevant if you're *constantly* bothered by something (e.g. sluggish performance in SC at *every* turn).

It'll get you to Ishum's Reach, of that I am quite sure (or I'm gonna be really disappointed!) and AFAIK there's nothing within reach for any ship after that - if distance from Sol is the goal???

Of course there are other locations that do require bigger ranges than the Dolphin will give but Beagle etc is OK with 40+jumponium.

I added to the confusion because I was going to take my Anaconda, it was literally prepped and ready to go then for some reason I bought the Dolphin and liked it - a lot. It is a real whippet in SC (+real space) and that has saved my a couple of times. But I can't remember how the DBX stacks against it.

*every turn*

lol or lack thereof... Ana **cough** conda!!

Essentially that was why I didn't take the Anaconda. Although when I am back from Beagle I will outfit the Anaconda for serious jump range and try and get myself somewhere impossibly remote.

Heh, my first attempt at flying an Annie was last year and left me almost in tears and ready to quit exploration. I ran back to my AspX and continued with her for a while. And yet, now I'm happily flying an Anaconda and it dawned on me that it's not the slow turn rate that makes or breaks things but rather my attitude towards it. Once I didn't resist it, my brain adapted and I stopped trying to use the Annie like an AspX, i.e. turn while stationary. I get her moving in supercruise and then turn, which makes things better. Also, I have G5 long range mod on my DSS and being the obsessive scanner I am, it helps immensely, as I can scan bodies from a distance without worrying too much about getting into their gravity well (especially helpful scanning GG moons). I love exploring with my ship, love her range, and I don't want to fly anything else.

Yeah! Planning ahead becomes a thing and I got that long range mod with the Annie's turn rate in mind. I do recall eventually going with the flow (it must be like caravanning) but my lack of attention sometimes and my fondness for browsing the web during jumps has left me liking the higher turn rate of the Dolphin more.

Like I said: saved my more than once - rofl :D

Anything that can reach 41.34 ly jump range can take you beyond Beagle Point to Oevasy SG-Y d0, Semotus Beacon, the farthest reachable star from Sol. If you wish to play it as safe as possible, you might want to shoot for a 42 ly full tank jump range. (So that you don't need to burn some fuel off to reach enough range.)

As for the Anaconda: I've always been of the opinion that the SC turn rate is fine for a ship of that size. Like in normal flight, you have to fly it like a huge ship, because well, it is huge. Personally, I like how it feels like you're captaining a large ship, not a small boat.
Of course, if you're coming from an Asp Explorer, it might be hard to adjust. After all, the Asp has considerably better SC turning than it should. This isn't exclusive to it though: for example, the Imperial Clipper does slightly better in supercruise than the Imperial Courier. As it stands, SC turning can be inconsistent between ships.

So, let me join the others who suggested that you try some ships out, see which one you like flying the most. (Cockpit, SC handling, internals and so on.) You'll be going on a long trip, and it'll feel much, much longer if you take a ship that you don't really like to be in.

Almost done engineering my Anaconda for jump range and low weight to head out! I decided on it due to the sheer jump range compared to my DBX. I have done many trips in it to places like Maia, as well as doing exploration passenger missions with it with only 20LY range, (Full combat loadout) and enjoyed it, so I shall set out with her. Thank you!

Ill post my unfinished exploration trimmed Anaconda. She is the same configuration as what got me to Beagle point and back on DWE when ships travelled those distances un-engineered:

I have a DBE as well but prefer exploring in the Anaconda due to her range, better internals and robustness. Annie's are tough birds.

Personal preference of course as with all ships. No one build is better than the other if you are happy with it. I have explored in Orca, AspE, DBE, Type6 and Cobra MkIII and without a doubt my always return to exploration vessel is the Anaconda. It just feels right for me.
