Decoding System Names?

Hi all,

in this thread, Chiggy and loutrek were talking about the system designations and that the first letter in the last group is a mass descriptor.

So, is there any thread (or search term) that will give me some information about how to decode these seemingly arbitrary system designations? And please, don't say the Canonn thread
