Engineers Decoding The Ancient Ruins

Need a little help getting started with this quest. I've gotten the quest unlocked to find ancient sites, but have no idea how to proceed in doing that. I could look up a guide, but that's really just cheating. I've already cheated by Googling how the quest is started. How are we supposed to know any of this without Googling? Is there a method?

Strictly in-game, you can start by going to the galaxy map and configure it to highlight guardian systems. However, it will do just that, highlight you systems where guardian structures have been found. When you visit such a system, after the honk the nav panel will show you a POI when you abroach within 1000ls of a body with "Ancient Ruins" or "Guardian Structures"; but the body in question might also be 200kls from the entry star, and nothing tells you which one it is.
It will also not help you with sorting out which systems/sites you need to visit to find the 101 patterns.

Well, technically it is not googling, so we can help you a little more here in this thread, I guess - after all, you asked for help ;)

If you don't want to follow the min/max optimized routes that you may find at various sites, you might make up your own route with the ED Shipyard Guardian Sites Optimizer. It lists most(/all?) known ancient ruins and the patterns that can be found on them, and it allows you to select the patterns you are looking for or already have, to calculate you a route.
When you are at such a site, you will get some basic hints by Ram Tah on what to do when you scan the obeliscs, but it will quickly get tedious to figure out which artifacts to take to which obeliscs. The page above also links to layouts of the respective sites and the artefacts required for each obelisc - if you wanted to figure that out on your own for 101 patterns - well, good luck (yes, there is a system behind it, but with the amount of patterns and swapping artefacts required...).

As such, even if you don't want to follow a particular "optimized" route, I'd still suggest to look up a guide that will tell you the basic steps that you need to do to collect the patterns, e.g. Canonn Research Ram Tah Mission
That is
- once collect 2 of each artifact; you can find those on any of the sites (=> ~12t cargo space on ship required)
- check the symbols on an obelisc(s) (this step can be omitted if you look up the required artifacts per obelisc on the site as described above)
- load the respective artefacts indicated by those symbols in the SRV and scan the obelisc(s) to receive the pattern(s)

P.S. Alternatively, you might wait for chapter 4 (3.3) with the release of the Codex, and whatever it might add to help you with those missions. However, there has been no details on what will be provided by the Codex, and how far this will really support us with those missions...

Detailed mission guide for the Ancient Ruins (RAM TAH mission at FELICE DOCK) here, if you gave up to figure out anything self:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...MISSION-GUIDE-Step-by-Step-111MCr(was-201MCr)

For others, which want to try this mission:
To get familiar with the Guardians, you may take about 5 to 10 hours of game time - visit FELICE DOCK in MEENE.

If you dock on FELICE DOCK in MEENE, you will receive a msg from RAM TAH and an entry in Transactions,
rewarding you 10.000.000 credits for the mission if completed in total.
The FELICE DOCK mission (Ancient Ruins) is the mission described in the Guide ( link above ).

If you dock on WEBER DOCK, you will receive a different message from RAM TAH for a different mission
and additional entry in Transactions, rewarding you 30.000.000 credits for the mission.
The mission at WEBER DOCK is a different one - there must be visited other places ( Guardian Structures ) for scanning.
And you need some Thargoid items for this 'Decypting the Guardian Logs' mission to complete it.

A guide for this mission ( Decypting the Guardian Logs ) is here:
https://canonn.science/codex/ram-tah-decrypting-the-guardian-logs/?highlight=guardian structures

It's not designed to be solo soluble - it took months for a large group of CMDRs to solve. ED is an MMO, so it's missions are designed to be solved by groups. It is easier now, but some bugs still make it difficult to solo (the item combos shown on obelisks on some sites are wrong).

And you're posting in a non-optimal forum - Aliens subforum is the better place to ask about these missions.

I got the mission from felice dock a few weeks ago but because I was also checking the 3.3 beta I forgot about it and time passed without doing anything (still docked at felice dock in main game). Can I abandon mission and get it again or will Ram Tah get angry with me for wasting my(&his) time and never give me a 2nd try?..

It is doable solo, why it took months to complete this the first time, is that the community had not discovered all the required Guardian sites, and to top this off, the sites that was discovered had some pretty significant bugs, that allowed players just sitting there getting the "data" while others tried various combinations. So you could now collect more "data" than was available in that location. This severely messed up the efforts, as many believed the site to be bugged for solo/group play, when it actually was bugged in open mode with many players at the site.

and now when have discovered enough such sites to collect all the required "data", and the with the new addition of getting the location (once you are within 1000 LS) of the structure, it has is now easier than ever todo, compared to first time, when we all stumbled in the dark, facing bugs that revealed more information than was intended, having to navigate buy planet coordinates instead of having a POI etc, etc.
