dedacated slot for stardard docking computer

adds a grade 1 slot over the planetary approach suite for the standard docking computer for the option to have it or not.
to balance it, the docking computer would be at a very vulnerable location so it could get damaged with ease.

Uh... Can't land that ship of yours?

Practice, Practice, Practice.

Long ago I proposed the introduction of software upgrades for the standard ship computer.

Appropriate upgrades like:
- the docking computer and
- the planetary approach suite
- Scanner upgrades
etc.
would then be software packages we cmdrs would buy at a software store in the stations.

This system would be much more flexible than hardware modules, because it can be endlessly expanded with all kinds of cool software for our ships and at the same time it would free up room for other modules.
Also in the long run the game needs this because FD needs to build a more complex world system, especially when they want to have 'walking around' in the game. Software stores would be actual places we could visit in stations or towns. Or certain software upgrades could be rewards for special missions.

I still believe FD should seriously consider this approach because the current system stifles gameplay with its inflexibility.

When I first saw the docking module, I'd thought since it was "standard" there could be more advanced variants of the module out there.
Software upgrades sounds like a decent idea. I'd hope someday the module could have more advanced autopilot features such as
able to track and follow a target, do multiple hyperjumps, auto approach a station in supercruise, etc.

I agree that all ships should have a limited options size one slot, for such things as a DC. The DC and scanners take up often lager slots than they need to and I would say, like the shields/HRP slot options, there should also be something like this, but as a size 1

not need a +1 slot or upgrading. It must be already incorporated in ship' computer.

Docking autopilot is valuable thing. Someone/sometime prefer to use direct piloting and someone/sometime look for automatization.

Btw docking computer theme is the one of regular.

Agreed. Automated docking should be a playstyle choice, not an outfitting one.

Incorporating this reminds me the LucasArts X-Wing/TIE Fighter line of games. Plenty of "flying" and shooting, little landing or taking off.

So this raises the question. Is this a sim game or simply an arcade shooter/Cargo Hauler/Explorer?

Should definitely be a thing, I doubt it would happen though. I see no reason why it should be damaged with ease, would make no sense. Just add it as an extra slot, like the planetary suite.

Give us an avionics bay , weight or slot limited depending on ship type. Give us a choice of additional navigation tools & guidance systems that we can install into the bay.

If one was to add an additional slot for the DC so long as it drawns power and has mass and is the only thing that goes in that slot, no need for additional draw backs, it is an option with a small cost.

That said universal DC I think would be best paired with the idea that not all stations offer autodock
Poor smalland frontier ones might not offer it as a service.
There is already an entry in the system map to show which starports offer Auto dock only currently all do.

All of them offering it is fine with the DC being optional and a high opperunity cost of a whole optional internal. If the DC was universal then non universal auto docking service is the thematic match.

Oh, you mean like Frontier Elite 2 and First Encounters...

I agree with you completely by the way, it's beggars belief as to why this didn't come across from the older games. Then again, the whole space management system was better in the older games, you had a ship with empty space and simply built it up as you will. Fully balancing out your setup including missiles Torps etc with how much fuel/cargo you can carry etc.
