Deep Space Class Ships

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know if there will be deep space class ships, i.e. faster super cruise, more storage for fuel, more scanners and so on? I've read a lot about the exploration part of E:d and sounds exciting. I had a brief look at exploring in Star Trek Online (meh) - you know what to expect in exploring STO, but with E:d and over 200 billion systems I think there's real legs in that.

There will initially be 25 ships to choose from in the initial game release so I think its safe to say that there will be something suitable for long range deep space exploration until Frontier perhaps come up with something else in a future expansion.

Explorer: Have the option to start on the edge of explored space with a long range version of the Cobra Mk III and 3,000 CR (randomised system choice for multiplayer reasons

I thought from Elite 2 days the ASP was the traditional long range explorer. Funky shape too. But ofc if you played frontier, you could sacrifice cargo space for upgraded hyerspace drives etc.. to a point, giving you extended jump range, but you still needed more fuel for greater distances. This suggests there might (should) be ships that are particularly suited to making these this trade-offs in ED.

Cool, that answers my question, I heard the standard beta release on 29th July will be a big release so perhaps we'll get to do some exploring.

Just to point out that choose means purchase.
As in available ships that the player can fly if they buy them.

The Asp is the ship I'm most looking forward to getting my hands on. I've always liked that ship even more than the Cobra MKIII

Fair point. I, like Frontier in their most recent newsletter, should have chosen my words a bit better.

This wording suggests it is a standard Cobra Mk III with an equipment choice suitable for exploration. The alternative might be a version of the Cobra Mk III that is designed for exploration and would be a different shell regardless of chosen equipment.

I hope there will be ship versions because it adds to the variety. That way there may be an explorer version of a Asp, which sounds interesting to me.

For the exploration, ok, but not only. There will certainly be special equipment for the spaceships for the secret military missions. In FE2, a type of missile was only available for the military mission.

I think you can actually use any ship (except for the tiny ones) for exploration.
It all comes out what you equip your ship whit.
Engines, weapons, shields, fuel scoop, scanners etc.
I don't think those items will be limited to specialized ship.
Its more so the ship is big enough whit space to fit those modules.
But I think cobra will be the ship that goes as a starter ship for exploration.
Then ships that have bigger cargospace/hull than that can also be used.
