Deep-space gravity wells question

I've been out in the black now for about 14 months and I've noticed something, off and on, that I can find no explanation for nor an answer to. I'm hoping some of you might have answers/theorys to what I've experienced.

Let's say that I have set a course to a planet and am registered in 'deep-space'...at least 20k ly from either the planet I've left and the planet I'm traveling to. Suddenly, I start to bleed off speed (as if I'm on approach to a body, or in the gravity well of some other object), but there is nothing around me.

I have stopped in some of these instances, flying around and scanning the area visually. I've honked. I've dropped in and out of supercruise in the area. Absolutely nothing. My ship acted as if it was closing in on, or passing near, an object but, for the life of me, I can't figure out if there's something there that I'm missing.

Any feedback would be really appreciated.

It's usually asteroid belts. Asteroid belts act like a "body", for ship-slowing-down gravitational purposes.

Check the orrery map to see if you're in or near an asteroid belt when it happens.

I would have thought the same thing, except I'm too far out between stars to encounter an asteroid belt...and I have checked the map to be sure. I'm hoping it's just a game glitch but it drives me insane that I mght be missing something new to explore...lol
