Deep space mining - Detailed surface scanner?

Quick question, am about to start mining pristing rings around Pleiades & California Nebula. Should I take a surface scanner to find it out if the field is metallic/rocky/metal rich?

Am checking remote systems that have only been advanced scanned, they don't seem to reveal the composition of the rings.

IIRC you don't need a DSS. Once you're close enough to scan a object it should still reveal the rings composition. You're only missing on the extra cash from a detailed scan.

Info based from pre 2.1/1.6 though. Not sure if it changed with the patch....

Ok thanks, well I'm out in Pleione (1 jump from Maia) All planets are discovered with the Adv scanner and have been directly scanned. The rings only say Pristine reserve, no mention of the composition.

Edit - Flew back to Maia and picked up a detailed scanner. Scanned the planet and it revealed the ring type, I guess the devs changed how it works.
