Default HUD confusion - primary/secondary need swapping places!

This is another thread which got archived when it shouldn't have been, since the problem still exists:

Since the first day I played E.D. (Premium Beta), I have found it very confusing that my Primary weapons are shown on the right (but they are fired by my left mouse button) while my Secondary weapons are shown on the left (but they are fired by my right mouse button). i.e. The weapons fired by the mouse buttons are on the opposite sides of the HUD that I would expect. And this still leads me to be briefly confused sometimes, particularly when I switch to an alternate fire group that has stuff I don't use often (like Kill Warrant Scanner, Discovery Scanner, Wake Scanner, etc).

In fact I never mix weapons & non-weapons in the same fire group, for fear that I'll accidentally use my weapon when trying to scan something!

I'm sure some smart alec will say I should just make my left mouse button fire the secondary weapons (so left is left) & right mouse button fires the primary (so right is right)... but it is pretty standard in most games that the left mouse button is the primary weapon, and if there are any secondary weapons then that is the right button (which is why that is Elite Dangerous' default mouse controls). So I'm pretty sure that would lead to a different kind of confusion.

So all I want is for the Primary & Secondary weapons to be shown where I would naturally expect them on the HUD. Just make this an option, please Frontier! I am sure it would help a lot of newbies get to grips with fighting quicker (and save me using the wrong kind of scanner half the time).

What's a mouse? ;)

Use a Hotas, no problems then (smart-alec remark over)

I wondered why the acceraration is shown on the right of the hub. But all joysticks throttles are on the left

The zoom on my Audi's GPS map uses a left turn to zoom in, and a right turn to zoom out. That's just wrong, but I adapted. You can too.

Couldn't you just swap buttons in the setup menu?

I'm pretty sure that most of us are use to it the way it is right now.

i think it's far too late to change the game at this stage. that said with the fire groups you have full control of what you define as primary and secondary, so why not just swap em about? when you click on a module in a fire group it will cycle between primary > secondary > not used. just swap your primaries and secondaries about so it makes sense to you.

if for you the left side is primary then just ignore the wording and make the left side primary, seems to be the safest bet if you're constantly having to double check which button you are pressing.

i have my own set of must-have controls and will often hit a game and remap key things before i even start playing. FPS's are a real pain for this, i like my reload on mousewheel button not the R key. i have a friend who prefers Q and E for strafe. naturally you could as you say swap the buttons about in the key config, but it might be worth messing with fire groups first if you're hesitant to do that. i'm just pointing out that it's perfectly normal for players to tweak the default keybindings to be more intuitive to them. you've got more than enough on your plate to think about without worrying which trigger you're pulling :)

I have primary fire on my right trigger, secondary on my left, it works for me, if it did not I would swap the bindings.

The right/left swapping and other things makes it look like they were aiming to be more intuitive for HOTAS first and then controller support, which I think was their design ethic. I play with a mouse and keyboard because no matter how I fiddle with the controller settings it's never comfy enough. I've had to rebind basically every key though because the default kb/m controls didn't seem well thought out.

Yes! The developers should invest time and money to implement something that you can fix by changing your keybinds!
You entitled types are AMAZING.

I was right. (Several smart alecs posted this exact suggestion, apparently without reading what I wrote.)

Some people also seem to think they should decide what the devs should consider working on, when it's the devs who get to decide what they work on.
