Demotion

To make Ranks more realistic and more worthy, id suggest that in future ED versions Demotions should be possible.

As we know, we can get influence and reputation. both has an affect on getting a promotion. But bad behavour should have an effect too. So acting against a superpower like the federation should decrease the rank as double as fast as it raises. So ranking up to Admiral and than deflect to Empire, just to fight against federation, should have impact on the federation rank. like demotion ot even dishonorable discharge.

So it becomes a "lifetime-decision" what superpower to join and what to risk if you got a sudden change of heart.

At the same time ranks should benegit more for the pilot. specialised ships, maybe an own station, getting credits by interests for trading there? Or what about Getting Megaships as Admiral which can load other pilots with their ships, or what about access to technology and high specialized engineers? So losing a rank would hurt.

In a Rank-System where higher ranks depend on what has been done "good" stuff, there must be a demotion possible, not only promotions.

Or have you EVER heard of an admiral of some Navy, which deflects to an enemy and keeps his rank and privileges? come on! ^^

Strange, I really don't care about rank. In fact I would prefer to be rock bottom so I don't ever have to be afraid of losing rank or live up to some ephemeral and artificial ideal.

Besides, how can one be more worthy than one already is?

I need to get rid of all ambition and ego and just play.
Play at finding out who the real me is without all the societal and cultural conditioning.

Whee!

:)

Yet another posting written on the limited view of how things are in present day, without considering how things were in history.

Just a random example, not that long ago: Among many other titles Zar Nikolaus II held a honorary rank in the Imperial German army, till his death. Now consider who Russia was fighting against during the first world war. That was normal among leaders of nations at war. The same was true for many noblemen. You can easily make a many pages long list of families who held titles of nobility in several nations, even when these nations were at war.

Once you look at things in this scope and consider how these auxiliary ranks we get in the game are seen, there's really nothing wrong about having ranks in both Empire and Federation. It was a normal thing for many centuries. Most of us just now are blinded by the binary "us or them" mindset which got all that common during the cold war and still survives to this day.

Plus, you could still rank up in both navies by only accepting missions for independent or alliance space.

The other thing is, ranking is done via missions, and most missions aren't really considered hostile or combat related, so delivering biowaste to the federation isn't really going to hurt your federation rank.

Would make sense if it's rank but it's not. It's a civil award. They rarely get removed unless someone turns out to be a total butthole.
