Depth and distance

I finally got round to setting up my Oculus Rift S today. It's been, shall we say, interesting. I seem to have solved most problems, though there are still issues. The most annoying atm is the closeness of the VR display. It seems to be right in front of my face. It's particularly annoying in System Map. I can zoom out somewhat, but the cursor and info panels remain in the same place. This is most frustrating when trying to select a planet with a cursor that seems to be a couple of feet in front of it.

Can I fix this? And if so, how?

Nope, that doesn't work. Since writing that post I've since discovered that the System Map problem is commonplace.

Not that it matters. I've decided to drop VR. There are so many issues/problems, and the VR experience doesn't begin to compensate.

You mean the panel on the left side in the system map? With all the info?
To me it seems its a bit too left. But I'm fine with how close it is.

You need to make sure that the key to reset your view is bound, (and use it at appropriate times) . I generally do a 'reset view' it in the second of the ED logo screens as the game loads, then again should I ever remove the HMD and put it back on. Of course when doinf a reset view, you head should be in your normal seating position. Also check and that your IPD is set correctly, then all should be OK.

Really for effective play in VR you also need Voice attack (which will work fine with the in headset mic and speakers). in fact I have "Reset View" as a VA command, so it presses the key for me without me having to distort my posture by pressing a key or button at that critical moment.

Do persist with VR - the experience of flying the ship in VR is well worth it in the end (although getting the controls etc right, will take a while).

I would rephrase that as "You might want to consider Voice Attack". It's a great tool, but I much prefer using buttons for everything. I recommend trying different options in order to find out what suits your playstyle best. :)

Sorry to hear you're having problems, I guess I've been lucky here.

Unless you rebind reset view key, default is F12. But.... there might be something else that steal your F12 binding, say nVidia. Try look to the side, say 3 o’clock, and press F12. If your view does not jump, then your F12 is not bound to reset view.

Also, make sure you don’t lean forward to reach for the F12 key and defeat the whole purpose of reseting the view, and reset your view to have VR panels in your face. For that particular reason, I bind the reset view to the pinky switch on my Warthog. You can use the Oculus touch controller to do the reset, but it’s a PITA.

ED has this tiny bug of setting your PoV by default at the cross eye distance to VR panels -- exactly what OP described. Also, it has something to do with how tall you tell Oculus setup you are, hence some players getting their view point at the ceiling of the cockpit. The first thing most VR ED players have to do is reseting the view.

That sounds dodgy to me.
Nothing at all like my experience. The curser is at the same depth as the planets.
There is a driver problem or something going on somewhere
I Googled "elite dangerous system map vr" and couldn't find anything remotely to do with closeness? Could you post a link to someone else with the same issue? It might be helpful in solving your issue. :)
