Describe Elite Dangerous - to an old noob

Be it online against other human players or offline solo with the occasional artificial intelligence interruption... can you describe Elite Dangerous (ED) in a simple way to a person who hasn't played a computer game for many years?

The other day I found myself trying to sell ED to an old school friend - and errr… 'glazed over' was my interpretation of his enthusiasm:eek: My ambassadorial skills were obviously lost in translation:S

Reading through this forum I sense there are those that have played all David Braben's Elite incarnations over the years and seem to know everything plus played all the other notable games out there and can compare etc… yet at the other extreme there are some eagerly awaiting re-ignition of computer games via Frontier's Elite Dangerous. This forum is buzzing with enthusiasm, ideas and anticipation but there must be a few of you who can enthuse Elite Dangerous to an 'old noob' without blinding them with abbreviations, 'in- words' and 'you had to be there' moments :D

If it turns out like I hope it will, it will basically be "like Elite, but in 2013, not 1984".

That is - It should feel familiar, but at the same time be brand new.

I am particularly loving that FD are sticking with a lot of the old ship designs and trying to keep the shapes similar, to not do so would be like making pacman square. It wouldn't be the same.

I speak, of feeling of freedom, adventure, escape, forget everyday worries, of embodying a personage while being oneself Have joys and sorrows, discover marvelous landscapes. And finally to convince him, I talk about of the sweater of David Braben (is it really necessary to do this ? :p).

Like the first part of this very much.. more detail please - best not mention knitware or the dreaded 'onesies' as the universe is scary enough as it is..

Mr Kipper; 'brand new' is a cool thing (i know what you mean) but what does it mean to someone who hasn't played Elite or similar before? Not meaning to be troublesome here but we need to help someone who has a hole in their life that needs filling (-; If only to get them to play and get shot down in the first 10 mins - last bit only joking

Only ever played Elite when I was a teenager on a Spectrum .. Awesome times and hope to relive some of them again through Elite Dangerous.

I am not a writer, nor can adequately convey my feelings towards ED but here's my shot at it:

"Elite Dangerous - Trade, Pirate, aid or con your way across the galaxy in an exciting modern space opera where you're the star. Relive those moments when you tumble out of space dock scrambling at the controls desperate to not crash, to hurtling through an asteroid field with the police hot on your tail. Believe in yourself and you too can join the ranks of The Elite"

In simple terms: Space trading combat game, set in the future; like it was (1984) but more so (2014) :D

The thing that makes Eltie different to every other game is the lack of barriers.
The 'end of the world' in gaming is always the single biggest immersion breaker to me (and I think many others....)

Its hard to describe to someone thats never experienced it but the ability in Frontier to go anywhere including land on any planetery body completely changes the feeling of the game.

Its something no other game can do, and even Star Citizen will feel like you're in a small box as it 'only' has 100+ worlds.

Its going to be a very different feel with very different player dynamics from any other MMO style game ever released because of this 'limitless' size as well.

Lord Of The Space Sims

To "borrow" a phrase from a certain wizard........

In the common gaming world "Elite" reads as,

One Game to Rule Them All. One Game to Find Them. One Game to Bring Them All and In The Darkness Of Space, Bind Them.

Did you ever want to be an astronaut when you were a kid? I couldn't even get to the first rung of pilot training as I had asthma. But Elite - Elite let me live in space, exploring star systems, rescuing people from exploding stars, mining asteroids and sometimes doing covert missions for the military.

Now, there is a chance to go back out there Elite: Dangerous will take you there. It's impossible, like crossing the Nefud to get to Akkaba, but "all you have to do is go".

Its a computer game that has no end or story, you make your own content and way within the game universe. Trade, Explore, Fight other players or NPC's. The only limitations within the game is what you bring into it. Other than that Elite is the biggest game in the Galaxy because it is in our galaxy and you can visit all the stars and planets within it.

It might be the best space game since FFE.

It might not be the best space game since FFE.

It might be the best space game since Elite.

It might not be the best space game since Elite.

Somewhere in that ball park ;)

Thanks everyone..

My question was a little rhetorical as I haven't actually played Elite !!!

So thanks to your replies I am re-assured by your personal visions of the game, sounds like there's something for everyone. It's 'what you make it' and the scope of possibilities with no ending (apart from death) that make it most appealing to me.
I am esp looking forward to Elite presented within modern day graphics. An immersive suspension of disbelief - what ever graphics card is used.

For me it was always about the freedom to explore and the distance you could travel... back in 1984 it seemed like witchcraft (or should that be witch space?) to have an endless sandpit to play in inside that box on the table. Actually it was more about buying and selling to fund my journey through outer space than 'pew pew pew' for me - though I did get a kick out of slaving trading or narcotics to boost the coffers occasionally - treat myself to an extravagant upgrade - and that usually ended in some 'pew pew pew' :)

Yes, that does usually lead to firefights (not that I've ever run any contraband, of course).
