Description of what's going on in the pilots screen

Ooooh the wiki......it's all in there isn't it. This game is more like dial yourself a paradise in the universe. In any possible way imaginable.

It’s going to take time. I usually tell people the following.

This is one of the most complicated games I’ve ever played, and I have been playing since the original in 1984. I believe that you could read websites, forums, and watch videos for 8 hours/day for an entire month, and then you would know the basics but still be a beginner.

So take your time, learn, and play.

I would also recommend only asking small questions here, but ask as many as you want. If you want to learn everything all at once, you won’t. Elite does NOT hold your hand and tell you things. It’s intended that people figure things out and help each other. Just start small, do easy things until you can do more complicated things, and ABOVE ALL ELSE: THE NUMBER ONE RULE IS TO NEVER FLY WITHOUT ENOUGH CREDITS TO COVER A REBUY (or 3 rebuys).

Welcome to the club.

^ This!
I've been playing fairly constantly since 2021, and guess what: I don't know how to mine. I know there's core mining and laser mining and stuff, but err.. I don't know how to do what exactly, because I've never bothered. (Note: please do not send me tutorials, I'll get to that eventually.) I guess a lot of us have one or more blind spots. There are really, really good combat pilots who've never heard of a Concha. There are explorers who never fired a shot at another ship.

Welcome to the club.
Dito.

I second all of this...

Also in respect to the scanner - this post has a simplified image with an explanation of the icons and their positions:

On the subject of scans.

If you get scanned by an NPC and a message comes up immediately then that NPC is either a pirate or an agent for some faction, you can tell by what is in the message.
If the message is not immediate then that was security and you were not on their list of baddies.

So you are saying that the triangle (cos hps deployed) is white when they are scanning you? I have never noticed that and yes 10 years here too. Is this new?

It seems like I recently experienced this but I'll be on the lookout now.

And @GiantLeap , to add to the knowledge base: When ships on the radar are attacking you they flash between red and white. Solid red ships are your enemies but not actively attacking...yet...

I never noticed it until recently, so I'm pretty sure it snuck in with one of the recent updates. I use default HUD colours. The best I can describe it is like a white cover is put over the yellow triangle during the scan, so you can see which ship it is unless you have a load of collector limpets all around you.. You'll have to watch it next time.
