With the release of No Man's Sky, I was thinking...
Why design a game where the player lacks any personal connection to the game world or have any reason to interact with it? There you are drifting in an endless galaxy of empty stars... never to make a connection with another player... your choices never affecting the game's story... never creating new lore by your involvement... and never sharing an experience with anyone else. The developers weren't kidding by calling the game "No Man's Sky" and I find it lonely. So, it is for that reason, I believe that Elite Dangerous should double-down on community driven events and community created content. We should choose to be the "Anti-No Man's Sky" and let everyone know that our galaxy is alive, because it was created by players who aren't procedurally generated.
Therefore... I'm announcing a little bit of a contest that I hope will appeal to Frontier and the community.
THE FIRST ANNUAL STARSHIP DESIGN CONTEST!
For what is it that gives us the greatest connection to the galaxy and other players, but our starships!
Rules:
1) Every commander may submit one starship design image to this thread before...
12:00am 9/1/2016 GMT.
2) It must be their own original creation.
3) It should try to follow a similar art style to already existing Elite Dangerous assets.
4) It must be aerodynamic and symmetrical.
5) Hardpoint components must be contained in retractable bays.
6) It must include a short paragraph describing its inspiration, use, and lore.

7) Have fun with it!
Starting on September 1st, you will decide which starships receive the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize.
Commanders will be allowed to cast one vote in a poll for the starship of their liking.
And on September 5th all the votes will be counted and the winners announced.
I hope this little event will encourage commanders to reach for the stars.
And if there's enough participation, I hope the far reaches of the "Frontier" will be watching, and will help make some of our dreams a reality!
