Proposal Discussion Design your own transferrable decal

Regarding, Be an Elite supporter, and get a digital code when the game is released to apply a transferrable decal to your ship, unique to you, the game’s backers.

What are the chances of being able to design our own transferable decals?

Just give us the xy pixel dimension and let us upload our pictures on a to-be-approved basis like the commander names.

What would your's be?

As a micro-transaction with a price .. quite good I would say :) (C'mon FD .. realize it's too good to be missed!)

As for what it would be ... not sure ... as it has to be approved that kind of eliminates quite a few  :D

I'm not too keen on this idea. For one, it is a bit of a strain on networking - in busy systems (some core nexus or trading hub), you'd have many ships with individual decals, that are all images that need to be sent over to you - that might be an unnnecessary network spike.

Also, well, there's a buhjillion ways to draw a phallus, or something otherwise offensive. The only way around is manually checking each and every decal, as they are doing with the commander/npc names for those who backed enough. Except here we're talking about something in the final game, which would be used by far far more people - it will just take up way too much dev time.

I'd rather FD spent their time on something more important. Manually checking every decal for signs of genitalia seems like it wouldn't be the best use of a developer's time.

I think the decals Frontier will be very good and very professional. I would prefer customize the colors of my spaceship (hull and cockpit).

Surely the imformation is the same with decal or without? all a decal really is, is changing the colour values on a group of pixels? you're still going to have a texture on a ship, but instead of being sent texture "b" you'll get sent texture "ba" ... the size of the data for the texture shouldn't be any larger, it's still the same as 1 image not 1 image + another image on top.

If you have 20 ships in system, they can have the same general texture. If all those ships have individal decals, then that's 20x more textures to send.

If it was made a purchasable item (with real money) then Frontier could roll out the decals in each patch so there would be no transfer of the actual decal during an encounter.

It's this inclusion in patches that makes me feel this would require a significant effort from Frontier - they'd have to check the decals for quality, decency and copyright. Perhaps, to be CERTAIN the graphic wasn't ripped from somewhere, they'd actually have to create the decal for you (at even more cost) based on your general outline.

My vote is a no for own decal designs. My fear is that the game would lose its unique style and look if anything goes for colours and whatnot.

That said, I've nothing against using in-game, dev approved options to personalise a ship etc

Hm. That's a good point - personally designed decals may break the overall aesthetic of a ship. And, additionally - just as you wouldn't want to see a player named "Jo3 S00p3rd00d xXxSlashSSxXx" as a commander name, you probably wouldn't want a "zomblolroflcopter"/"trollface" decal on their ship. Immersionbreaking, after all.

there's no reason then why the game can't store the decal on your hardrive in a data folder? Then instead of loading that decal from the net each time you encounter the ship, it downloads the decal once to your hard drive, and loads it from there each time you encounter the ship?

I really don't get the fuss over this ... it's not like you're re-downloading the entire game each time you enter a system. It's an online multiplayer game game that some people want to be an offline single player game.

What if the game has 500,000 players... or more? That's 500,000 decals and not to mention that people will have different ones for different characters and constantly be changing and updating them!

Given the "cash for credits" thing, I'd certainly see this sort of thing as a paid extra... quite simply, why should Frontier put any effort into the moderation of such images when it's a free-to-play game? :S

I understood this to mean a decal for all of the backers. i.e. we all get the same one

Yes, that is what I thought as well. There is one elite badge/decal (ok, there are a couple of variants) everyone when they get there and one badge for being a backer and maybe another for a founder member. Anyway, I imagine that these decals might be of such a size that you might not see it unless you are going to intercept them or sitting next to it in a dock (a bit like the decals in the t-shirts, no wait that didn't happen :) ).

You would only need to send the textures once you are in the same p2p session as the other players. Also I'd imagine the algorithm they would use would join session before the ships are close enough to see and could transfer all needed decals across in a sideband.

Also does seeing a decal matter? You shouldn't be getting so close:)

A decal would typically be no more than 60x60 pixel. That equates to less than 2kb. The most amount of ships being together at one time in Eve is around 3000 but I don't think Elite is about massive space battles. Anyway, the decal won't be downloaded until you're close enough to see it. I don't see that is going to have a significant effect on the amount of data going through your connection.

It is true that if you give a teenage boy a brush he will draw a phallus first and a boob second. That's why it has to be moderated.

Solution: Make the decal the same as your image avatar. So - you have to post on the forum and your pic will automatically get moderated by the forum moderators and users.

How about just keeping the "personalized" decal local?

In other words the only people who will ever see it is you?

No need to check, no bandwidth impact etc. You will see the decal on your ship - but no one else will. Fill your boots!

Personally if I'm in a dogfight the last thing I'm trying to see is how pretty my counterpart is :D

All that being said - if it doesn't impact the design or distracts from the main development of the game… :)
