Design your ship... contest?

Wouldn't it be great if...

Frontier games ran a competition for players to design a ship for future implementation within the game?

You wouldn't 'have' to render it, (Tho I guess that could be a way of showing off your stuff if you wanted?) it or any fancy stuff, just digitise a hand drawing and provide the reasons why it should exist? What its functionality, class, tonnage was etc. I think if I was given this opportunity, I would probably sketch an advanced thargoid ship, or maybe based of some of my previous discussions I have been involved in, a ship salvage vessel perhaps.

... Are you listening Dave?

Star Citizen did this. It worked out pretty well.

I wasn't involved in Star Citizen. So I can't comment. By the time I logged into kickstarter it was over and it appears that they wanted one of my youngest children as ransom to play the game so I immediately lost interest. beside I think it's overly ambitious to be honest.

Yes we could end up with the spaceship equiv of the car Homer Simpson designed ;)

We could but would the artists vote for that as the winner? It would really have to be good to get that past them. Besides they would have the final specification to create so that it fitted into the universe without being OP or OTT.

What has that got to do with anything? All I'm saying is Cloud Imperium did exactly what you proposed: Ran a community competition for a team to create a ship for the game.

And they ended up with this:

Which is pretty dang cool. It even has a spacetoilet.

It would be easier than you think- FD give us the basic shape/s (some basic plain solids to choose from) and we use that to fill in the blanks.

Well that would be a lot of work for them for just one additional ship. I'd rather see them continue making ships of their own at a higher pace, they're good enough at it.

Though an Elite: Dangerous-Star Citizen joint space ship contest would be cool, it'd be interesting to see if people can manage to make a ship that could fit and work in both games, with fitting artstyles, specifications and overall design from a gameplay perspective.

Yeah, Star Citizen did this and now everyone on their forums has rushed out to buy a gold shirt and thinks they're armchair game asset critics. I'm so sick of explaining the "cheese wedge" ship design to some of those folks.

lol

Since backing both of these games I am constantly amazed at how many people on the interwebz have apparently been to space.

Whenever there is a picture of space: "That's not what space/planets/stars looks like. It looks wrong to me"

Whenever there is mention of a flight model or ship design: "That's not realistic. It feels wrong to me"

Apparently lots of people have travelled back through time from an interstellar future where human beings sit in metal space planes and shoot projectile weapons at each other and I missed it :(

Eh? What's your point? You think that lore ships are too clunky?
