desperately need some technical help

Although the technical staff is already investigation it, may be there is someone here on the forums that can help me.

I played the game with no problems, but suddenly (when I started a new session)I get the message:
" Error creating the web proxy specified in the ‘system.net/defaultProxy’ configuration section"
Now I can't play anymore.
I removed everything that belongs to Frontier from my computer and download the new client installer. (even the hidden appdata/local and roaming)
After the client launcher is installed, and I start it, I get this message. So I can' t download the game from the web.
The only thing I have on my computer is an installed "client installer" and that doesn't work.
Anyone who understand what the problem might be. I doesn't even know what the error message means

Thanks a lot for any help

Eric

Have you emptied your %appdata% or roaming folder of elite dangerous/frontier? I had another issue which was resolved after completely purging my computer of frontier, including %appdata% or roaming.

Have you ever actually used a proxy server on that machine? I don't think you have - and suspect there is something foul afoot.

Virus scan and system integrity check and backup your data!

Sounds like you may have spyware that change your proxy, check your network settings in whichever browser you use, I,E, FireFox etc. fire fox should look like this.

yours should be set to no proxy, unless you are running one. Also check your TCP/IPv4 Properties in your network connections in control panel if using windows and see if it is like this, just to make sure nothing changed.

EDIT: Run Malwarebytes is a great free tool for removing malware/spyware..

I googled the error. Very first hit:

"I had this same problem today and found a solution for it. In my case, the problem occurred because I was using a network disk for storing my project. When run from this network disk, this problem occurred. I moved the project to my local hard drive and it was gone. I am guessing this has something to do with security, as Windows considers the network drive less secure than my hard disk."

Is everything installed on a local drive?

Second hit on google, something else to try:

"After seeing there is absolutely no proxy present on the system/being used, and that there is no network drive involved (just a plain vanilla workstation setup), try running the command prompt with administrator privileges and typing "netsh winsock reset"

Then reboot."

There's a lot more to read from a search for this error - seems quite a common .Net thing.

Never used a proxy server. No idea what it is.
I will try your suggestions.
Thanks. I will let you know.

Backup your important data right NOW. Then make another backup onto another storage device. A 3rd won't hurt either.

I'm willing to bet cold, hard cash you've got some nasties on your machine. Backup your stuff, nuke and rebuild your machine, get it updated and secured, check a backup for nasties on another known clean machine, and then restore your data from that known, clean backup.

In an effort to possibly prevent further issues for you, please sanitize your computer and look at any programs, malicious or not, that have the ability to modify your network settings/files.

Anything that messes with winsocks where you need to run a reset is pretty alarming and can cause network issues for the remainder of your install.

I am just trying to help.

This issue may not have been caused by .net, but if you find evidence that indeed .net cause the issue, it could be that it was installed in a bad order. Not saying you did that at all, but just throwing it out there.

I would suggest you make sure you have defences set up and running on your PC. I use Microsoft Security Essentials (after my cousin, who is a professional programmer, recommended it), as it seems to work well without hogging system resources. You need to get the downloader using the machine it is intended for, as part of the process checks your machine to send you the correct version/bitwidth downloader.

Hi Reignhardt,

Thanks for the help.
I run the malware program here suggested and than used the windsock reset.
The free malwareprogram found a lot of malware.
I found that was shocking!!
I pay every year a lot of money for Mcafee security. Firewall, spyware and malware protection. And still another program finds a lot of malware. I wonder now how good that program is.
And that feels bad, because I changed from Norton because I found that that wasn't working very well.
Anyway, it works now
Keep using more anti spyware en malware programs.

Eric

McAfee is not a good av / malware provider.
Norton has a habit of find false positives (malware that isn't) and trashing your os.

Both the above slow your machine too.

I would recommend Kaspersky or Eset as better alternatives but either way running full av and malware scans with different packages is always a good plan.(Nothing catches everything all the time).

Man! Thats harsh! But I am glad you found and hopefully fixed all your issues! Happy flying! -=S=-

Another handy tool is RKILL.EXE. Get that from CNET or another trusted source, it's free.

Copy RKILL.EXE to a jumpdrive, run it from the jumpdrive not from the local disk. All the other stuff you are doing is great, but RKILL will kill anything that's running that shouldn't be running and tell you what it killed. You can then research what it killed to see what the removal method is..

Also CCLEANER is great, it's also free. I run that LITERALLY every time I shut down for the night. Will keep your machine from gumming up with garbage.
