Destination suggestion for first time explorer!

Hi!

I'm going on my first exploration trip, starting this week-end, and was hoping to get your suggestions for a destination.

My purpose for the trip is to unlock Palin, the last engineer for me to unlock - and also increase my exploration rank. Fastest way would be to jump 5000ly out and back, but I fear that will make me rush it and not pay attention to anything other than how many jumps I have left.

The destination doesn't have to be ~5000ly away from the bubble, could be longer. I've set a loose cap on 7000ly, though. Preferably, I'd like to see alot of black holes and neutron stars along the way. I'll also be bringing along an SRV, in case there are some cool (or hot) planets to land on.

Thanks in advance for any good suggestions.

Just make sure that when you set out, move away from the galactic plane first. If it is a popular destination you might also want to initially travel sideways too, so as to get away from much-travelled places/routes.

I would recommend NGC 7822, its 3kly away from the bubble and has a ton of black holes and otype stars
From there you could move towards the Heart and Soul nebulae and back via california nebula to Maia

Its all well chartered territory but is a nice round trip that doesnt take too long, especially for a first exploration voyage

I second that. NGC7822 is awesome, and as Mr Baggins says, there's tons of black holes there. Can't remember if there are any neutrons there though, it's a long time since I visited.

Also, consider a supergiant star tour. It's really worth seeing some of the monster stars in our local area, and they're all within a few thousand LY of Sol. Belelgeuse, Aldeberan, Arcturus and of course VY Canis Majoris. The latter is a monster, fills your entire screen at 10kls distance! There may be some more bigguns which I've forgotten too.

As suggested, NGC-7822 is great. Lots of black holes and O-type stars. If you're up for the distance of the journey, Heart and Soul Nebulas are worth a visit. You can also visit a rather large black hole along the way at Slegou AA-A h37. It's about halfway from between the populated bubble (not the bubble nebula) and Heart and Soul nebulae.

Yeap, NGC 7822 provides the cash.

You could also check out the PW2010 Supercluster. It's beside the Omega Nebula and full of dead stars. Most systems are named 2MASS rather than PW2010.

Clusters usually tend to have Neutrons and black holes. Make sure to scan White Dwarfs too and check all systems with O and B Class systems on galmap for dead stars in them.

Those are all very good suggestions. If you want to turn your eyes coreward you might want to try out the Lobster Nebula (NGC 6357) and the associated Pismis 24 cluster. On the way there you can also check out the Lagoon and Trifid nebulae or the Butterfly Cluster (NGC 6405/Messier 6) with V945 Scorpii at its (rough) center.

I am shocked nobody has recommended the veil west nebula along the way, one of the most fantastic nebulas a stones throw away from the bubble - stick this in your route plotter "Veil West Sector DL-Y d68"

in fact here's a stop off list if you want

Veil West Nebula

Veil East Nebua

Sadr Region (Huge central star here)

Pelican and North America Nebula

Cave Nebula

Elephants Trunk Nebula

NGC 7822 (as recommended others - this has a lot of very bright stars in a line with multiple black holes orbiting several of them and several other black holes)

Then you have a few choices.

You can head 2000ly further away either crossing to the next arm, or following the arm just looking for ELW's

Or you can extend your trip to 7000ly each way by going either to the Bubble nebula or the Heart & Soul Nebulas.
You will see some amazing sites, the stop offs are quite short (so you see something quite often) and you will have done enough to unlock palin!

I know it's probably a bad suggestion for a first time explorer as well as a bit too far out, but i always found my trip to the planetary nebulae near Dryuae Aip Gi-b D13-0 to be an incredibly memorable and amazing journey. It's at the edge of the galaxy around 9000LY from SOL, and the view is incredible. Traveling around the edges of the galaxy is incredibly exciting and shows galactic structures you won't find anywhere else in the galaxy.
