Destroy Guardian sentinels from ship?

Hi folks,

I am planning to head out to a system with Guardian structures to unlock a Guardian module blueprint in the near future (after I've finished some engineering).

I have not had any combat time yet (planning that for the future) and having seen a few YouTube videos showing how many sentinels can spawn, and also finding out for myself during planet material gathering that the SRV is a bit clumsy when it comes to aiming & firing, my mind wandered to other possibilities, as I don't want to travel all that distance just to get my backside kicked.

I was wondering whether by flying low and close to the pylons using just ship's thrusters would flush out sentinels who could then be despatched by ship's guns ... has anyone ever tried this or can offer any advice?

Was also wondering whether these sentinells can be target locked e.g. would maybe a single ship's missile take each one out?

Any help appreciated.

Not sure about Guardian sites but I shot down a lot of skimmers with my ship so it could work on guardian sentinels too? :)

You can kill them in a ship but they ain't difficult to kill anyway. Fit a point defense on the top of your ship and it'll take out the missiles. Use your handbrake to stop yourself getting thrown around. And just play as intended

I helped a friend of mine by dumbfiring into them from above as he plodded around in his SRV doing the grind, so yeah, its achievable

I haven’t tried this, so maybe someone can verify if it would work. Outfit it with turreted weapons, and choose “fire turreted weapons at will” (or whatever the exact wording is) in the right panel. Maybe park nearby, and if the sentries attack you, your ship will open fire, whilst parked, if it has a clear shot at the sentries. I’ve heard people have gotten their parked ships to fire at the sentries, but I haven’t tried it.

I’m pretty sure you have to be in an SRV to activate the sentries. They’re really not that dangerous, they’re just annoying, ‘cause they’ll flip your SRV over. Oh, and they’re easier to hit if you put your SRV in turret mode.

Yep,

If you really want to have some fun with the Guardian sites, you can fly overwatch in a small ship, activate the obelisks and get rid of any Sentinels that spawn.
You can turn it into a bit of a competition, by seeing if you can activate all the obelisks before the guy in the SRV can collect a Relic and take it to the terminal.

Course, the fact that you have to re-log so much can make it a bit of a faff, but it's fun. [up]

3 pips to sys and 3 to weapons and you can take on a armada of Guardian Sentinels no problem. I did 90% of my Guardian grind solo.

If you go with friends a SLF is great for this, a fighter with a pair of beams is awesome. If solo fit a point defence to your ship and land it as close to the guardian site as you can to help with the missiles.

Its almost like..... small ship pilots have to learn to game the systems.

:D

They are annoying blighters. They always appear to pop up behind me and then knock my srv over. Spiteful little oiks deserve to be flogged.

I lasered most of them from the ship, main reason was I was getting 15FPS in the SRV at the guardian sites which made aiming almost impossible. They aren't that hard to kill, handbrake + point defence are your friends.

Yep, but a pig to target (you have to be too close) and even with small beams, you'll likely only hit them with one hardpoint - but doable (and yes, you can set your fire groups accordingly). They're not hard enough to do this though, unless you're helping a friend get used to the site.

I was expecting sentinels to be a real threat but honestly you must muck up pretty badly to get hurt.
They are slow, attacks are weak, and you can easily take cover from them. When they don't see you they mostly hover in place allowing you to roll in and out of cover taking potshots.
Don't fear the guardian sentinels. Just be ready and cool.

Edit: I'm not complaining. I think they're great as they are. Sites are so isolated that touring them is a war of attrition and material loss, so I think the balance is just right.

You dont need to aim with indiscriminate dumbfire strikes.

OP, no need to shoot sentinels from your ship. The only thing you need to make sure of is to mount a point defense turret on the top of you ship so it can shoot all the missiles which sentinels fire! After that sentinels are cake.

Sentinels aren't much of a threat. The most annoying thing is the missile attack which can throw you around a fair bit, but as was already said, you can park your ship with PD nearby, engage the handbrake to stabilise your footing, use the terrain to your advantage or generally just kill them before they can launch their special attack.

I recently unlocked the three Guardian SLFs and I'm not a combat pilot either.
Do as said, install a point defense on top of your ship and all missiles will be shot down before they reach you.
The sentinals aren't very smart just keep a little distance and they're realy easy to take out.

I synthesized some premium ammo in my SRV, every little bit helps.

They are VERY easy to kill in the SRV. You just have to follow some rules:

- Equip 2 Point Defence in the upper side of your ship. Park it really close to the site. It'll kill the missiles from the Guardians before they hit you.
- 2 or 3 guardians can be tanked head-on. When they fire, put all the pips into shields; when they stop firing, put all the pips into weapons. You can stand still no problem tanking them.
- If more than 3 guardians, maneuver so there's an obstacle in front of some of them. They're not very clever and usually hide behind cover. Use that to finish the ones that are exposed.
- Use the turret. You'll get many more hits that way. You can move while in the turret too, if needed.
- Remember to bring some materials to refill fuel and ammo on your SRV. Or as I did: bring 4 SRVs...

It's very easy, and It was pretty fun too, at least for the first 2 hours... The relogging mechanic I think is long overdue.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies cmdrs. Sorry for the delay in responding, my broadband has been down. I'll take your advice and fit PD, but may carry a couple of cannons anyway and see what I can flush out whilst flying and report back.

Yes, you can absolutely shoot them from your ship, however not all of them are going to pop out of the ground while you're flying around. You're going to need wheels on the ground to stir them up. They're not that hard to take out with an SRV, though I strongly recommend picking a place that gives you some cover, switching to turret view, and holding your handbrake while taking them out.

Why the handbrake? They simply seem to have a harder time rolling your SRV with their crescent laser when your handbrake is on. Doesn't mean they can't, but it certainly seems to help.

But if you want to just kick the beehive and run for your ship, that works too.
