Engineers Destroy the power generator

Need some help here! I accepted a mission to destroy a power generator, very good pay and engineer rewards. The depot is a tiny low security installation, when I landed I noticed a Federal Navy ship parked right next to it, I am roughly 6km away.

I'd rather not kill a Federal navy ship & get a bounty on my head, is this normal for these types of missions? I've heard of ships patrolling, but not sat guarding an installation.

Here's how I handled it.

I shot the ship a couple times, and it took off to attack me. Then I killed it in the air, then landed and drove the dune buggy over. Spent awhile zapping things with a taser, and left successful.

In my case, the outpost was unsanctioned or something... ie, I don't believe I gained a WANTED status.

I tried a couple times doing this without attacking the guard ship; the result was the guard ship shooting my SRV to death.

Ok so you are basically saying I can kill this guy without getting a wanted status? completing the mission is a non issue, it just happens to be in area where I'd like to stay friendly with the Feds.

The Base is independent, I don't understand why it's being guarded by the Feds, surely it's own faction should be providing defense?

Am wondering if I can race in, blast the generator and race back to my ship, nobody get's killed

No - 777Driver, wait for him to fly away. He will eventually. Or another might spawn. Gotta time it right.

Edit: OR - if you don't mind losing an SRV (which c'mon, who does? They're like 5k each), go in blow up the generator and get killed. You'll respawn in your ship in orbit (dismiss ship first)

2nd Edit: Also, I've heard that you can swing in quick with your ship, and destroy the generator pretty easily. They're bright & orange after all.

Not quite - I'm saying I was able to kill the guy and not go wanted. Your guy and the station may have a different legal structure than wherever I was.

-shrugs- who knows...

Lately I'm just ignoring most "legal penalties" for doing missions. As long as I'm not committing a crime against a faction I want rep with, I'll do the mission.

I suspect (just a guess) that attacking the station is going to result in a penalty of sort, if there is one. After all, you'll blowing up someone's power. As to 'can it be done' the way you describe - I suppose. You'll have to be a much better SRV combat driver than I am, though. I couldn't get closer to 500 meters to the station before the ship was in the air and attacking. Plus turrets on the ground, and a couple skimmers... add an air attack from a ship into that, and it was too much for me.

EDIT:

TheDayman sounds like he's on to something. I have seen 'guards' leave an area (eventually) when I was hunting a target... it took awhile, but they did all eventually leave and I was able to kill the target without 12 cops chasing after me. So, try that at your outpost. Just sit outside the security perimeter for 5-10 mins and see what happens.

If it's got lasers, cannons, railguns: attack the generator, ignore ship, be mobile, you'll probably like the show

If it's got seeker missiles: wait for departure

If he's clean you'll obviously become wanted. I've never seen an installation guard just leave. Once the guard is killed, more ships of that faction periodically come in to handle you. I do believe you can destroy the generator from your ship. You can probably blow up the generator either way and make it out without killing the guard.

Ok, well I'm in the base right by the generator, my ship is nearby. The FAS is parked on a landing pad, I think I'm just going to blast this generator and do a run for it.

Edit - Yeah so that didn't quite go to plan :D

I can verify that you can blow it up with a ship. I don't know if that is intended, but it works.

I have found this to often be the case. Sometimes those Federal ships leave after a while, but that isn't always the case. And even when the do leave, sometimes they come back (or a different one arrives) and they hang around for a very long time.

For now, I have stopped taking these missions, as I don't see a way around attacking the ship.

It's a bit of a pain sometimes.
I do not attack authority ships.
I am not that kind of guy.

It would be great if all these ships left eventually.
I like to stake out a base and seeing a combat ship parked there and then waiting for it too leave, but that is only fun if... it actually leaves... and in a reasonable time :).
I will never attack authority, even if that means I fail the mission.

I'd love to have some kind of binocular function to observe details from far a way. Would make me feel like some secret agent.
In the X games you sometimes had to follow ships and you had a very good zoom function.

Speed helps...I would not take the flying fortress.
I like to use my Sidewinder for the sabotage missions...
Just make sure you take out the right generator because
if you don' t and you have to circle back it becomes a
proper mission.

Does the mission fail on ship destruction?

If not...I think shooting the gen with your SRV and sacrificing your SRV afterwards (let the base/ship kill your SRV) is the fastest way with the least in fines/bounty (time with a bounty is my concern, not the cost).

Just be sure to cash in any bounties you have before you do it, I guess. You lose those if you die in your SRV, right?

As far as defending ships go. I usually hang around for a minute or two see if they        off. If they don't I usually try a made switch or two until I get either an easier ship or none at all.
