Destroyable Capital Ships

Enemy capital ships should be destroyable. The explosion from the ships should damage all ships within a certain radius, maybe a clear the area message can go out. Also they should give off a huge combat bond or bounty when destroyed for the risk. Also they should be far more dangerous.

Currently there is no reason to even go near them other than to look and go 'awww how cute' [haha]

I'm just hoping this happens for the thargoid battles [alien]

Settle back, let me tell you a tale.

Many moons ago, I got Descent:Freespace. Truth not in the name there, but it was an okay flight game. Or maybe it was Freespace 2? Whatever.

ANYWAY, I had a heavy fighter. I had gotten royally torn up near an enemy capital ship, so I went for the nearest cover. An enemy capital ship, BUT, below the flak cannons. The ship itself covered me, and I only took a few hits from above while in some depression, so the shields came back. So, I fired. And fired. The capital ship hull went down, ever so slowly, as I was using guns, not torpedoes. But with no real incentive to leave, I just sat there, whittling it down.

Now, these ships went boom when they died, impressively. I knew this, but a heavy fighter for a carrier is a pretty good deal, so whatever. The capital ship hull eventually dropped to zero, and I braced for an Earth-shattering kaboom.

And it didn't happen? Oh wait, it's not instant! I stand on my tail, and burn away from the doomed capital ship as fast as possible. Probably a good idea to bring the rear shield to absolute full...

BOOM.

Rear shields gone, some hull damage. Lool. Equalize shields... wheee!

Have not tried this for a while, but at one point in, you could target and destroy the "heat vents" or what ever they are called, and once this was done they would leave the area.

If you destroy all its heat relays it retreats, and you get a 150,000 cr combat bond for having "helped making a capital ship retreat". No way to destroy it utterly though.

Capital ships are persistent within the lore.

Stronger interaction with them desirable? Hell yes. They aren't ten a penny to naval forces though.

Thanks for the info and stories. Will try the heat venting attacks but still, i want big explosions. To be honest better explosions from all ships would be nice. It's kind of like watching a lego model explode on the floor with some smoke and a spark

I don't see why it would explode or should explode. It could just as well go dead like the Thargoid aftermath.

They should only be destroyable if they are a lot stronger. They are humanities top engineered vessels with tech that's classified. One ship killing one is silly. These are like our bosses and should have the difficulty of one.

Speaking about this, I actually don't see why all ships have to persistently go boom, like in an action movie. I'd like to see a ship simply go derelict and cold. Not everything has to explode.

Cap Ships need to be borderline OP and I don't think that they should be able to be destroyed by a player, or even a wing of 4 highly engineered players.

What I would like to see is missions resembling the original trailer we got, whereby you would accept randomly generated missions in a conflict zone to assist in routing the capital ship. Destroy the shield generator, etc etc. But the capital ships at the moment are far too complacent.

Sitting in cover shooting at one of the heat vents? The Cap ship deploys a wing of 12 fighters to intercept you.

Take one of those huge rail guns from the Imp ship to the face? You're dead.

First seeing a Cap ship jump in (on the opposing side of a CZ no less) was a pants-browning experience. Then, you realise that they're pretty much impotent. It's like having a 13 inch member without being able to get it up around super models.

I still think Freespace has the absolute best capital ship implementation of any space game.:D One of these days I need to upgrade Freespace 2 to those new graphics the Freespace Open Project has provided...

Yup Freespace's cap ship battles and ensuing explosions were flapping awesome!! I can still hear the "shrieking" noise of ripping metals that occurred before the "boom". :)

It's a shame that this thread died. Lots of good ideas there. I imagine a certain Mod thought that it was dangerously close to the dynamic explosions/deaths that Star Citizen is aiming for so locked it. Pity.

Lol nothing like that at all - all threads are subject to auto-lock after a certain amount of time now. If a thread has been deliberately closed, the relevant mod will explain why as the last post.

The discussion simply never started around it is all.

Be cool to have dead ships in orbit get pulled to the surface, or caught in an asteroid field's gravity and just float to be discovered/salvaged by a miner/explorer

I'm gonna wet-blanket this a little, though.

Please come up with an implementation that allows players to interact with them, but still prevents them from murdering every capital ship within days/hours. Either the capital ships are destroyable, but so OP that a wing of 4 perfect death machines can't kill them, or each capital ship is killed by wings of 4 OP perfectly PVE-engineered death machines.

There's really no middle ground. If the players aren't the ones building stuff, they're the ones dedicating their time to killing it. And there's many many instances, so whose instance determines if the capital ship is dead or not?

And also, I've seen a Farragut inside the planet, near barnacles. They have some stuff to fix before making them persistent.

Honestly, I'd like to see them capable enough that a cg is required to kill one. I mean, they carry corvettes as SLFs. I guess the majestics carries cutters/clippers as SLFs? They should be nearly indestructible and be capable of waging war for days on end. Btw, I've read with the majestic being an interdictor, its should be capable of interdicting? Or mass interdicting multiple targets? There's a ton of potential in these vessels.

So, didn't realize fighting capital ships could be this fun

There's so many things wrong here, I don't even know where to start. The complete lack of capital ship maneuvering, for one. Whoever is flying those fighters needs a kick in the head, too. The elite combat prowess of three sidewinders? Three sidewinders that become the deciding factor in a battle between two capital ships? Wat? And they think that destroying things inside the fighter bay is a good idea?

What capital ship in their right minds would even end up in that situation? The Fed apparently lost all weapons and engines, yet the Imp just sat there, right in front of all the guns?

All the survivors of this incident should be busted down to minimum possible rank, and put to work cleaning latrines, for gross incompetence. On both sides. Including the Sidewinders.
