Destroyed instantly on startup

I just got a reply back from Support, and they've refunded the insurance cost plus a bit extra for the lost bounties. I'm happy with that!

They said they're aware of a few issues when logging into asteroid fields and are currently investigating.

Bounty hunting will recommence tonight and I'll be more careful where I leave my ship. Thanks, Frontier!

Good news, grats :)

The advice given is still valid though....stay well clear of anything solid when logging out.

Similar threads have popped up again and again about parking ships in RES. Don't do it. Make sure you are far away from the plane of asteroids before you decide to park your ship. Those asteroids move and rotate so when your ship is spawned at logon it may end up too close or even inside one.

You park your car on a street using your own judgement and the same applies to ED.

You logged off in a RES.
You logged on while an asteroid occupied the space your ship logged off in.

Boom.

Indeed. Technically, though, if that sort of thing is actually meant to happen then there's a pretty good chance that any celestial object could occupy your space when logging in.

Asteroids orbiting moons, orbiting planets, orbiting suns, all swirling around in the cosmic soup... If you don't play for a couple of weeks you might find yourself in deep space or inside a star.

For gameplay reasons it's probably not an intentional behaviour (and they did say they were looking into it).

Just fly above/below the 0 plane of the system and you won't have to worry about anything orbiting through your parking spot.
Afaik there aren't any wild/weird orbiting bodies that have an angle above/below the plane.

But the ship was basically destroyed while I was logged out. I logged back in to see its final moments.

Is this the legendary 'background simulation' I've heard about?

Bahahahaha... Oh god thank you for that. You sir made my day.

On a serious note, sorry about your loss, ticket it and FD should take care of it.

Bahahaha....

Sorry I can't help it.

It still includes the fact that celestial bodies still move in real time whether you are playing or not.

Just wanted to echo this.
you should think of logging off like your going to sleep inside your ship, everything else still goes on around you.

I think the op was lucky to get an insurance refund as from his description i believe he left his ship in the path of an asteroid when he logged off.

Its always best to supercruise away to a quiet spot, drop into normal space .... Wait untill your wake has disipated, which i think is 2 minutes. Then log off when you know your safe.

I lost 6 mil or so in vouchers in a res when I slammed my vulture into a rock on the dark side of the planet.
Seriously!! In a 20mil spaceship, I expect a headlight that is better than a candle!! :)

And that's relevant to this thread how? :D

New player here. Can I park inside the station before I log off? Thanks

Welcome Cmdr New Player :) - Yes you can but you should make sure you are on the pad or in the hanger (ie docked) before you log off.

(The station moves in its orbit while you are logged off - if you are not docked you may log back on inside the superstructure).

As a rule where ever you log off it should not be on the orbit path of anything. Stations (while docked) are the safest places to log off but you can log off anywhere except in hyperspace.

So I took my refunded insurance credits and headed off to the next community goal, which is a long way in my Vulture.

About halfway I realised I needed to refuel before the next big jump. No big deal, I just adjusted the course to the nearest inhabited system and jumped...

...except I can't have pressed the button properly or something, because my original course was still in the computer and I used the last of my fuel to jump into an empty system. Realised what I'd done just as the hyperspace time reached zero.

Anyway, my 1 million credits that Frontier so kindly handed back lasted me about 10 minutes in all. Space is a cruel, cruel place.

I can do you one better just now. Last night I finished up a system and made a few hundred LY back towards civilization (I'm currently, or rather I guess, was, out 10k LY exploring). I log off, in the middle of no where with nothing near me as I always freaking do, log back in today directly to the insurance screen....

Needless to say I am VERY upset.... I have MILLIONS of credits coming my way for all the data I have.... 5 earth likes, a hundred or so waters and terraformables, hundreds of stars and a dozen or so black holes..... What, the actual F, could have blown me up? I was in just a normal star system.... a;slkhflkuaef

This is becoming worrying. I'm out exploring and have been since 10th April. I'm starting to think I shouldn't load Ydiss up and just stick with my alt until this is addressed.

I don't think this has anything to do with being near objects when you log off. Too many reports have said the opposite.

I wonder if you log off in a planets orbit, when you log back in you would spawn inside the planet?

So far as I recall, you don't die just by being inside a planet. In fact I recall someone flying through one at normal speed. They have no collision.
