Detail Scan levels

When exploring what is the difference between a level two and three scan? Also is there no level one?

I have a medium scanner and fire it off on a new system then fly to each astronomical body and Scan it till it completes. Would this give me a level two? If so what do I need to get a level three? Perhaps I need the advanced scanner?

Thanks for any help

There currently isn't a level three scan. Level one is using the discoverer scanner and level two is detailed scan of planets.

Level 2 scans are also bugged. Mine has been stuck at around 500 or so, even though it have been out exploring for about 2 weeks and have scanned about 1000 bodies...

This screenshot (not mine) shows a level two and three detail scans. I'm guessing a system scan is level one. But why two detail scan levels?

1 is ping
2 is scan body
3 is detailed surface scan

2 & 3 only updated when you sell data

3 is bugged and confirmed by FD

OK thanks.
So are you saying you can do a body scan without a detail surface scanner? I thought the basic scanner was just for pings.

I do seem to recall there was a change log that dictated otherwise. A level 2 scan is when you approach a planet and allow your scanner to do it's job. A level 3 scan is when you have a detailed surface scanner run concurrently and you get the indication of Additional scan details.

Right now, the numbers appear to be backwards which has already been brought up.

Lvl 3 scans are the one made prior 1.2 patch.

So everyone that started playing after 1.2 patch has:
lvl2 scans are surface detailed scans, they get updated only after you sell the data.
lvl3 scans 0.

Everyone that started playing bbefore 1.2 patch has a number of lvl3 scans that's dependant on scan made before 1.2 patch. New scans should update the lvl2 entry, only after data has been sold.

It is thought that these lvl3 scans will change meaning in the future, where new game mechanic about exploration will be introduced. For now the meaning should be this one.

Good news is that the system is keeping track of all our activities, so when there's an update player that already put efforts have them recognized, like all the players that started exploring before 1.2 have a record of that in lvl 3 scans above 0.

The Discovery scanner (any of the three types) will do a basic surface scan of an astronomical body or it may actually be your normal ships scanner (not sure). Detailed scans are only done if you have a Detailed Surface Scanner fitted.

please, can you tell how do you know this.
or is this your personal guess? ;)

if you can verify your statement, there would be clear facts about the issue.

1. there are the three discovery scanners, which make the "level one scan"
and you have (for max results) to trigger it manually.
(only distinguished thru there scanranges (do not know in the moment))
(see "Nutter’s explorers guide to the Galaxy")

2. there is one surface scanner, which make the "level two scan",
(this goes automatically by target and point (on various approachdistances))

3. there is at the moment no "level three scan".

@Serpentstar
A level 3 scan is when you have a detailed surface scanner run concurrently and you get the indication of Additional scan details.

there is no indication how you could run a surface scanner "concurrently".

can you explain this, please.
maybe this can change arguments above.
