Detail scanning black holes?

Just wondering how can we do a detail surface scan of a black hole when nothing escapes it's surface

The whole "nothing escapes" thing has been a misconception that has been denied for a few good years now actually.

Aye, plus all you're really doing is measuring mass, diameter etc which you can determine by measuring the event horizon etc.

Not a "surface scan" sure, but there would be stuff the instruments should be able to pick up. Hawking radiation for example.

Hawking radiation for solar mass scale objects is astonishingly tiny.
