Newcomer / Intro Detail Surface Scanner

Hi I Had a detail scanner fitted in my Cobra when I went exploring, and when I scanned a Planet it would tell me the make up of the planet ie Rocky, ice, or water, or most important metal rich, made some money but went back to trading. I have now bought an Asp and kitted it out for exploring, now when I scan with the detail scanner a planet I only get The faction owner ie Federation and the size ie 180,000 km and no info of what its made off, Has something changed or is my scanner glitched. I dont want to start exploring in the Black not knowing if I am scanning a valuable planet or a lump of worthless Rock, any help please :S

Have you got the detailed surface scanner module powered down in the Modules section of the right-hand HUD by any chance?

I did that, forgot about it, and wondered why I wasn't getting any detailed scans ;)

Yeah, now I'm confused.

The basic discovery scanner: scans objects when you get close to them. Gives all info, including type of planet.

Int scanner: ping with it, and it finds bodies within a certain (500 LS?) range.

Adv scanner: ping with, and it finds all bodies in the system, regardless of range.

Detailed surf scanner: Does what?

Okay so:

Basic/Intermediate/Advanced Discovery scanners: responsible for the discovery of the existence of a body within a star system.

Basic/Intermediate/Detailed Surface scanners : responsible for examining the surface conditions, gravity, temperature, size etc. of a body within a star system.

BDS, IDS, ADS (same thing, different ranges): Find bodies (Where?), do basic surface scan. (What?)

DSS: Do better surface scan. (What exactly?)

The Basic, Intermediate and Advanced scanners use a pulse to detect masses. They are what identify items so they show up at all on the system map. The 3 types only differ in range (500LS, 1000LS, infinite LS respectively). They are also what you use to do detailed close scans of an object, and they all function the same way for this purpose.

The detailed surface scanner just improves the payout from scanning by providing more data. It does this automatically.

Ninjaed! Ghaaa!

Detail scanner scans the surface and tell you what type of planet it is , rock , ice ,ect also tells you if you have hit the money with metal rich planet, water based or earth type

You have to have a basic discovery scanner. That's what actually getting the scan data. The intermediate and Advanced scanners are used to find the bodies in the system so you can get close and scan them with the basic.
That is wrong.
Basic, intermediate and advanced scanners are all the same. You can scan bodies with any of them. The difference is in scanner range, nothing more.

I thought I had a basic and Int scanner, would pop into a system, ping the Int scanner, find, say 6 bodies. When I got close enough, I would get the "detailed surf scan complete" message for each body. Yes?

So a 'detailed' scanner adds even more info/money on top?

Do I need a 'basic' if I have an 'advanced'?

I think this is the most clear explanation. The only thing to add is that with the basic, you don't have to ping, it just finds them if you are close enough.

Last point of confusion...what do you need to get the 'discovered by' tag. I thought it was the Intermediate scanner, because it's the first one of the three (basic, int, adv) that gives you the 'detailed scan complete'.

Maybe they need to rename the 'detailed surf scanner' to avoid the confusion?

Please read my explanation in my quote above yours. Basic/Intermediary/Advanced as you put it are the Discovery scanners. Then there's the Surface scanners - that scan the things you've discovered.

The Detailed Surface Scanner - picture an add-on module that talks to your standard ship's targeting scanner, which provides your computer with much more detailed information about the stats of the system body.

You can power the module completely off or on by selecting it (as you have done) and pressing the fire button. Toggles On or OFF.

You can also decide to put the module on a higher or lower power priority - say you had a weaker power module and your current loadout was using too much power - setting various modules to lower priority would mean they'd automatically get shut down when for example you deployed weapons.

Sorry to jump in but I am close to trying exploring out. So when I look at the system map and do not see any station....maybe just a plant with nothing else. Is this where I explore? In other words once I outfit my cobra with the scanners where do I go? Do I scan in hyperdrive? Sorry if this is a dumb question....are there tutorials on exploring for Newbs? :)

So....

Basic: finds bodies if you are close (<500 LS). Scans basic data when close enough (varies with body type).
Intermediate: Ping to find bodies upto 1000 LS. Scans basic data when close enough (varies with body type).
Advanced: Ping to find ALL bodies in system. Scans basic data when close enough (varies with body type).

Detailed Disc: If you have one, when you are close enough to scan with a basic/int/adv, it adds data scanned and gives you the extra money and the "detailed surf scan complete" message.

What is needed to get the 'discovered by' tag if you are first to find/turn in?
