detailed scanner with no basic scanner??

Can u use a detailed scanner at a system without using a basic or advanced scanner? if so, does it get you anything?

As far as I know the "detailed scanner" is like a turbo charger, you still need an engine(basic/inter/advanced scanner)

Yeah seconded. I tried that, sold the basic one and installed an advanced one then couldn't figure out why it was broken.

there are the basic and advanced scanners for scanning the system you are in for astronomical bodies. Then there is the detailed surface scanner, that scans the bodies you have discovered. you only need the discovery scanner to discover planets and stars, but you need the surface scanner to explore the details.

On the discovery scanners, basic ones discover a certain area of the system, advanced discover everything in the system you are in in one shot.

Then there is the detailed surface scanner, that scans the bodies you have discovered. you only need the discovery scanner to discover planets and stars, but you need the surface scanner to explore the details.

On the discovery scanners, basic ones discover a certain area of the system, advanced discover everything in the system you are in in one shot.

The Basic, Intermediate and Advanced discovery scanners allow you to "ping" to locate bodies within a system to ever increasing range.
They will also localate objects you fly close to without the "ping" most often seen as you jump inot an unexplored system, the Discovery scanner will log the Entry point Star without needs to "Ping"
Lastly they allow you to lock on to an object and scan it for infomation on the body

The Detailed Surface scanner is extra equipment, which cannot scan on its own but that allows for additional infomation to be obtained when you lock on and scan an object with any of the discovery scanners.

I am at work so cannot provide a side by side comparison but for example
Scanning a planet without the Detailed Surface Scanner might result in detials such as
"Small ice world, 8000km diamter"

With the Detailed Surface Scanner you would have
Small Ice world, Mass x, Diameter, y, Atmosphere z pressure made up of a% b% c%. Surface tempertuae d Kelvin. Volcanism g, orbital period... and so forth.

Ahh must have been the detailed one I used. Didn't work without the Basic one. I put in a bug report then found out about it and felt like a right twit.
