Detailed surface scan range mod requires normal sensor module range to be modded?

I posted this in the Dangerous discussion forum, but I should probably have posted it here - hope some kind explorer can advise:

I'm a bit confused - you can probably tell from the thread title.

I want to be able to scan planets etc from a greater range for exploration so I'll be modding my Detailed Surface Scanner, but that works in conjunction with your normal sensors doesn't it, so does the range on those need to be increased as well? Help!

No - two totally separate subsystems. (You can even turn off the sensors and the DSS will still work, though wait until you're well out of inhabited space to try it)

Thanks - so before you buy a Detailed Surface Scanner, and you scan planets etc and get exploration payments, you are using the ship's sensors - but when you buy a DSS, it completely replaces (and enhances) the sensors function as far as exploration objects go?

Oddly, no - you can still scan planets even without a DSS and with your sensors turned off.

You don't need a discovery scanner to scan planets either - though you do of course need it to find them to be able to scan them, usually.

If it makes any sense, the detailed surface scanner goes into an Optional Internal Slot while the sensor is a required internal component.
You can put in a low mass / low drain sensor as it doesn't do much for explorers. It's more of a combat oriented thing, just like life support.

Ah the yes the "eyes only" sensor function. Once you get close enough to something that you can see it with your own eyes then you have "found it".

Huge star/planet in front of the ship but it is unrecognized by the ship, cus no special sensors and the core sensors are turned off.
Then you narrow the eyelids and look at it's center. And If you look at it hard enough... BAM. It suddenly appears as data on your ships computers and maps. Kinda creepy, if you think about it.

Well, during that time you're entering the information manually.
