Detailed surface scanner change.

I've been outfitting my first long range exploration ship and I can across something that would be a very nice change.
Could the Detailed surface scanner be changed to a utility mount device? It just feels so out of place in every build. Having to slot it into a size 3 slot just feels wasteful.
It would also be very nice when searching for resources. I prefer to do this in smaller ships for their planetary agility and it really is quite tough to wedge a DSS in.

I don't think this would really make any build OP and would just be a nice QOL change.

Thanks for your time :)

tl;dr
Make DSS a utility mount plz, ty.

Another idea that has been mooted is to combine the stellar scanner and the surface scanner so they only take one slot. I think that most explorers agree that these scanners are inconvenient.

Moving them to a utility slot would make sense to me, and it then means you need to give more thought to your utility load out (most of my ships have fully loaded utilities, so I'd have to lose something).

Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope. I need my utilities. They're far more precious than module slots.

During exploration? I don't understand, The only time you need a bunch of utilities is for combat and if you are doing combat you probably won't be using a DSS... Am I missing something?

Let me guess you don't have Heatsinks?

The real answer here, since Frontier won't do volume based design, is to have components that fit in multiple categories. That way, you can mount the sensor rigs where you need them.

Not using the Hardpoints, put your sensor arrays in the space... Same principle for Utility/Optional mounts.

Given that most exploration ships have at least 4 tons of unused space in the Hardpoints, this only makes sense.

I mean sure but that would probably require a whole new re-balance. Whereas there's precedence for scanners in utility slots, your kill warrant scanner and wake scanners already go there. In fact it makes way more sense for a sensitive sensor array to be mounted externally.

You shouldn't need that many heat sinks

Oh, I agree with you and with new 2.4 updates. Explorers could have loads of them. If they farm them from combat materials.

Of course I have heat sinks... they are heavy and only needed if you mess up, ideally at least... So filling every utility slot with them seems a little overkill.
I think it depends on how Wasted the player is either due to drugs or Alcohol

Yah, I don't make murderships. Most of my ships have DSS and ADS, even the combat ones. Because my ships are built like space ships that have functions other than to murder people as efficiently as possible. ;) When my Vulture arrives in a brand new system during a courier mission or other I take the time to fully explore it. My FDL isn't packed to the gills with SCBs and HRPs either, shocking I know!

I understand your sentiments, but those ships aren't exactly multi purpose. As much as I feel for you, I think the majority of people use different ships for different roles. At least until they get the massive ships that can do everything but aren't exactly short on slots.

this gets my vote

Your using Chaff and ECM when you're in the Deep Black? Really? What sort of griefing have you earned that this is absolutely required when doing survey missions? Even in my DBX, I had space for such a suggestion even with my heat sink launcher.
