Newcomer / Intro detailed surface scanner

I have a DSS 1C and I am within 200LS of an unexplored planet with no first discovered name. my DSS does not come on to say object scanned. what am I doing wrong please?

Distance to the planet depends on planet size. Very small worlds mean you have to get much closer, sometimes down to 5ls. Large ones can be scanned from further way.

ok never got it to kick in but was just inside 90 so probably stopped too soon. however, I am now at system with sun and 4 planets all undiscovered or claimed (name for someone). I am just outside the suns yellow ring. how close do I need to go here and how close can I go with out heat damage? sorry for these questions but new to this stuff.

Safe hover distance is when heat is 64% or lower, 65%+ and heat steadely rises and at 100% heat modules start take heat dmg and at 140+ heat hull start take dmg.

Inside gravity well marked by the yellow ring ship will auto disengage super cruise , a Clear sign you are way to close to the stars surface. for scan to start make sure the stellar Object is tagged and you looking at it , if tagged but you look a diffrent direction scan can end before its done and you need look at it and start scan from scratch.

Btw detail surface scanner is a passiv scanner you will stil need a discovery scanner , the detail surface scanner just buff reward gained from any scan

Make sure the star in question is 'selected' so it shows on the left hand holographic where your target normally hangs out, and face towards it (just not too close as Jan notes)

ok I got a detailed scan on the sun and one planet. checked system again and no name on either. what am I doing wrong here?

You can't sit at the star and scan everything at a distance, that's what the disco scanner does. It scans the system and gives you the location of the bodies. For the next step, to increase revenue earned from each body (and to also get your name on them) you have to fly to each planet at surface scan it with your detailed surface scanner. You can't do that at distance.

You will be able to surface scan larger mass bodies (such as Stars and Gas Giants) from much further out (hundred/thousands of LS out depending on the mass of the body). For smaller planets and moons you need to get sometimes as close as 5-6LS before the scanner kicks in.

You also don't get your name on them until you return to populated space and sell the data. That's where you will get confirmation that you are the first to discover the astronmical body.

ah! ok I was traveling to them and getting the detailed scan message but no name. did not realize it only came upon selling data. thanks very much. I figured it was me again but nope, well only in the when part. thx for taking time to set me straight.

I spend a lot of time being sure to perform detailed surface scans on every object for this very reason, and I've noticed (watching some twitch feeds) that more than a few seasoned explorers don't bother. The just use the DS and then move on. Is this because the time spent doing surface scans isn't that much of an increase in map-data revenue?...or maybe these guys just don't need the credits? Any insight is appreciated.

I've been exploring for now 2 weeks and have come to the conclusion that its not worth surface scanning ice planets, rocky planets or roid fields. I always scan the larger gas gaints as there can be signs of life (tends to be the big brown textured ones), high metal content planets (they are usually close to the sun and close together taking only minutes to scan), water worlds and of course earth like planets. If there is a second sun less than 150,000k and it has interesting looking planets I would take the trip. If the other suns planets are just ice or rock forget it, if they are high metal make the judgement if you want to spend 5-10minutes getting over there. Can be a good excuse to go get another drink, snacks etc. Most I have travelled is 300,000ls to check out what I thought was an earth like and turned out to be a high metal. Guess I need higher resolution graphics or better eyes.
