Detailed surface scans and "first find" systems

Simple question but time is money so they say
If I enter a system with say 53 objects in the system and all have been first found by Cdr X then
1. Should I bother detailed scanning all planets/stars as Cdr X has already been here
2. If I do scan all 53 objects will I get cartographic monies on return for my second hand find.
I am aware first finds attracts a 50% bonus but i dont want to waste time exploring 'unexplored' planets that have clearly been explored by Cdr X. Is it just me or does it need clearing up? Sorry for the noob question its just not making sense to me.
Thanks for any replies.

If a planet has been discovered you will see CMDR's tags on the system map and you get the basic payout (100% payout). If you DSS an undiscovered planet and hand the data in before anyone else does you get the bonus and your tags on (150% payout).

Overall if you are going for credits you probably want to just scan the high value targets regardless if tagged/untagged.
If you are going for your name on the universe you want to scan just unexplored.
If you just want to find interesting stuff you may want to scan everything.

Only you can really say if its worth you scanning all 53 objects, you will get the 100% basic pay even if someone else has found them already.

I endorse what Alex has said and also think it depends on what you are doing... for the past three weeks I have been working towards the latest community goal and selling data for Earth Like Worlds, Water Worlds and Terraformable ones and was only interested in what looked like good candidates. Now however I am now back on my explorer head and scanning entire systems as you never really know what you are going to get.. but again I have gone passed scanning icy planets if the entire system is of that type... so It depends on what you want out of this game... Name on planets or dosh...

Scan technique is probably explorers' "hottest" topic. In a system that has already been discovered, I will personally only scan those planets that seem of higher value (ELW, WW, Ammonia, etc). Even if the system appears to have not been scanned, I am still picky about what I spend time detail scanning. For me, the time it takes to scan down 12 icy planets around a brown dwarf could be better spent, well, doing anything.
.
This technique will increase your value / time. But of course exploring is not for those with $$ in their eyes :)

For the CG it only counted system scans. ELWs, WWs etc didn't matter.

If some other cmdr has scanned the objects it's best to just move on to the next system, Plenty of stars out there.

I am totally with you, but even those with no $ in their eyes will hesitate to scan a System with only Ice Planets - at least if its some Klie out in the dark where noone ever will see your effort of scanning worthless Ice Rocks ;)

if a system has already been scanned and its somewhere I want to put my name (for example near a nebula) and there are icy untagged planets I will scan at least one of them to say I WAS 'ERE :D

Otherwise if the system is scanned I will pick out the money makers and move on quickly...

This all depends on your motivation. If its the glory of spraying your name across the galaxy for posterity (and this is something that motivates me) then you are quite right.

If its ranking then no. There are plenty of bodies which are worth more on a rescan than a FD tag. ELWs for example can be worth 60k - more than most "cold" systems - and more than honking a system and moving on. Neutron stars and black holes are pretty much always worth doing. Even a humble HMC terraformable is quite valuable and worth getting in, if ranking is your goal.

If you are doing it to make money I'd suggest changing profession ;)

Excellent replies to this question thank you all for contributing. I generally skip those systems which have previously been pinged and fully scan the truly unexplored ones. Thought I may be doing myself a bit of a disservice doing that but clearly that is what alot of Cdrs are doing.

I am after cash and ratings and exploring too, but im not exploring every planet out there with my detailed surface scanner:)

Thank you all and happy trails.

Must... scan... everything! I know the developers are laughing at me, I just know it. Must... scan... everything! Even the blasted belt-clusters which pay-out exactly zero credits for each cluster. DAMN YOU UNIVERSAL CARTOGRAPHICS! :D

So if I want to farm the profitable planets which class of star am I best filtering? K M or G?

If you want to farm profitable exploration you want to go the Neutron fields. Valuable planets aren't too common and fairly randomly placed. Neutron fields on the other hand you are guaranteed a high value body in every system. Its a good distance to get there, but when you do you can get 2~3m per hour.
