Dev team, Better AA for Horizon?

Sorry for a first post being a request but that's the reason I'm here.

My system is based on a 5900X, 64GB RAM, 3090.

I'm playing at 5408 x 2736 (Set in Oculus app) with a Quest 2 and I still see jagged edges.

ED is a game with a rather huge userbase. I think you guys have the resources to go back and implement a decent AA in the engine, at this point it seems highly needed in VR.

DLSS or FSR would be also great.

ED rocks! I have it since 2016 and now is when I'm really diving into it with the proper gear. For the most part is great but the lack of good AA is noticeable.

Thank you.

With a Quest 2 you don't really need to increase HMD setting because the resolution is already tip top.
Have you tried instead increasing SS? I have found that has a good effect of minimising shimmer.

Hi. Thanks for your response. :)

The resolution I mentioned (5408 x 2736) is set on the Oculus app, it is already SS since the games will run at that resolution.

It is well known ED's AA is not optimal and no matter how much SS you throw at the game you still see jagged edges.

Hi Sacco_Belmonte

With respect, many people get confused with the slider in the Oculus app. 5408 x 2736 is what is required to get a 1:1 render resolution in the Quest 2.

The slider in the Oculus app, at its maximum setting (all the way to the right), is for it to render 'native' in the HMD. The extra resolution is what it also needs to produce the barrel distortion required for the lenses. The 1x on the slider is what it thinks your system can do at the different 72, 80, 90 or 120 Hz. This is why the '1x' changes depending on the Hz setting.

If you have the additional headroom try increasing SS in ED. If you haven't added SS in the Elite menu, you haven't added any super sampling. I tried it a long time ago max slider and 1.5 SS in game setting. It made my system crawl but the slideshow looked beautiful! :)

At 5408 x 2736 there is no additional headroom (when game is on ultra)... I do have some while flying (around +30% to +5%), but in the stations I have a headroom of -5% (which doesn't matter as much)

I've seen other games look pristine at that resolution, namely StormLand (uses TAA) and Alyx where jagged edges and shimmer are for the most part gone.

StormLand has the most dramatic results, if I choose other AA than TAA I can see jagged edges and shimmer as in ED but with TAA the image is close to flawless.

I would say ED should implement TAA or any form of AA that works better than what they currently use. I would understand if they didn't work further if this game was old and dead, but is still very alive.

I'm gonna try experimenting a bit on non ultra and try pushing the SS further within the game options (ED profiler) and report back. I do remember using 1.5X and the jagged edges were still there so is not really a resolution issue.

I'm in no way negatively criticizing the game, I rather like to suggest a way to improve it. :)

Sure!

And AA (I think) is largely broken in ED.

Try lowering the slider a bit and then increase the in-game SS to match. I am looking forward to your results. :)

am I correct in saying though this game uses direct x 10...……….
most of its runtime dll's are in fact old direct x 9 library dll's?
and the launcher itself is code based on internet explorer 11?
