Devils Advocate, naming and Shaming

We just have to remember its a little minority group of posters who want a carebear game where every negative emotion, dooing or thought is a bannable offence.

Most people can handle and accept beeing killed, beeing griefed , outsmarted or outplayed. Its just a game and we have insurrance - so there is zero setback other than 10-20 mintues of travel time.

A game without anger, panic or adrenaline is just a numb truck simulator.

I think David Braben is responsible for all this bemoaning of 'griefing' with everyone jumping on the band wagon..

Really? This is not my experience, it is something I have come accross many times in many games, and I am not even a huge versus gamer.

Killing someone on an opposing team in a game, be it COD/BF4 or ED in federal defence is NOT griefing.... even IF they they had a bigger badder ship than you.

killing players on the SAME team as you, ramming for no reason inside a space station IS griefing.

Attacking people without cargo and no bounty who are no thread to you, is arguable. It is probably not griefing but it is cowardly and pathetic, ruining the game for others for no reason.......... griefing maybe not but they will be going on my block list, and if that does not work - and it probably wont - if there are too many people doing it, it will force a lot of players - esp the loan wolfs, which are in effect the core elite players - into private online game which would be a shame.

I consider killing for the sake of killing with no benifit to yourself along the same lines of driving backwards down a track in a racing game. Just becasue the game mechanics cant stop it does not mean its not an idiots trick and should not be stopped imo.

@Bolthammer, do you feel the same way about deliberate friendly fire on counterstrike? maybe you do but I assure you the regular players wont like you for it.

Now Carebear is something I have only come across recently...... I associate that with the kind of people who made EVE a game I no longer have any interest in playing... but like you are about Braben and griefing, I am probably just ignorant of such things.

Sooo,

As devils advocate I like to stir the pot a bit on the more popular theories and laws.

So we have a no naming and shaming clause in the TOS now. Who's idea was this? Was it the moderators or the developers? Do we have some bleeding heart wearing rose colored glasses or are one of the mods a griefer themselves and do not want to be discovered? Questions need to be raised.

During an interview FD plainly stated the community would get together to handle the Griefing in the game. Did I watch this interview incorrectly?

Ok, so just how do we test handling griefers? There is no way to get a large scale list of griefers in game except....these forums, why then would the moderators or developers not think this through before stating, "no name and shame"?

There is a disconnect somewhere. I think it is the moderators. Surely when the creator of this game states plainly and to the fact that players will communicate and band together to handle these griefers things should run smoothly, lists should be created, discussion on when to attack these people, why players in ED think they do this, and help threads to corner and take care of this abhorrent behavior.

Instead the moderators....or someone institute no name and shame. What are players to do, run around in dark closets in tiny groups whispering the names of those that cannot be named?

This is absurd. With the great inability to communicate during this test, listing names of griefers is the only way to communicate the threat they pose to the player base and the potential player base that interacts with these people.

You do not take away a weapon from one side and leave the other defenseless, and piecemeal communication between one person or tiny pockets of isolated players wont cut it either.

FD stated, for the record that griefers would be handled, from getting shoved into their own instance to a separate server, this cannot be done with "naming and shaming"the bleeding hearts fuzzily implemented.

These super moderators had better get with the developers and get some guidance on what this policy is doing.

There needs to be a thread on these forums for naming griefers. this is part of the testing of this community, to setup a network and have it in place before the game starts, isn't that the point of testing?

Demand a player defense network thread with names!!! (grin)

You all have a nice day now..y'hear. :D

The moderators instigated nothing, the updated rules were discussed with them and approved by me and other members of senior management at Frontier. The mechanisms for how we deal with anti-social behaviour are being discussed in the DDF and internally, but they certainly won't be random accusations posted on our forums.

Let me make it clear that moderator baiting or disrespect will not be tolerated on these forums, they do a difficult job as volunteers.

Michael
