Devs Are people too..

With all the fuss over Xbox exclusives and power play and the like I spotted this today as regarding another storm in an internet tea cup for Guild Wars 2.

Basically Arenanet said "Hey our new expansion starts at 35 quid and if you've not got the original already we're throwing that in for free too". Cue lots of entitlement QQ, full of venom only keyboard warriors can muster

Anyway. This blog is from one of the very wonderful artists at Arenanet and how the backlash made her feel(the picture kinda sums it up).

Regardless of how you stand on it and the ED issues, it should hopefully give pause for thought :)

No they're not really people. This is like those wierdos that insist that milk comes from dirty animals called C'Ows. Devs are a consumable resource and nothing more.

You may support a crazy pirate but when you say stuff like that it makes it all better.

But OT, devs must sometimes wonder what is going on here. While some anger is justified, most times I feel ashamed at what is posted.

But the "hate" regarding that stupid expensive GW2 expansion wasn't directed at any "Devs", but at their marketing. I mean come on, a lazy addon for the price of a full game and then you don't even get another character slot? x)

People are mean. The Internet just gives them a wider audience. And a shield.
Exactly. So making yourself a public figure on the internet opens you up to a lot of people with that kind of sociopathic tendency and lack of critical thinking skills. It's something you have to be prepared and account for, just as much as having insurance money in your pocket before you leave a starport. The internet at large is a lot more dangerous than any game will be. It would be nice if that wasn't the case, and people didn't require a thicker skin just to create something and get paid for it, but this is the world we live in rather than the world we'd like.

Or we could all not try and brush it away as "that's the way it is". Social injustice can be changed if people stand up to it.

And how do you propose to do that outside of just not being as obnoxious as the worst elements of society? This is the price we pay for free and easy mass communication. Having to communicate with other people.

Elite's devs are not people, they are Thargoids. This game has a serious Thargoid bias. And if you walk by Frontier's offices at night, you will hear chittering.

I do not accept that price. Speak up. If someone says something you don't agree with, say so. There's no need to be obnoxious you can object and still be polite. One thing that won't change anything is just accepting it as the way that it is.

This goes both ways. Gamers are people to, and when you take payment then basically withhold parts of the game u better expect some backlash.

Criticism does not have be mean or rude.

You stand up to it by not being a sheep and saying 'oh boo hoo the internet is mean' and joining in... Small steps, eh?
