Diamondback Explorer

If you want to reach the other side of the Galaxy, then the DE is your ship.

It's got the farthest jump range, and is capable of defending itself.

The Asp has more versatility, granted, but if you want to attain a high jump range, you have to strip it down to the basics.

I was able to fully arm my Diamondback Explorer, add a chaff launcher and kill warrant scanner, kept a 16 ton cargo rack for light missions, and upgrade most of the systems at least one, and my jump range is still over 30 light years.

So for sheer long distance travel, nothing beats this ship.

It's a great ship, though it has some obvious limitations.
It really is an armed explorer, giving you better punch than any other dedicated explorer, at the expense of range or versatility for trading.

It certainly isn't an all rounder in the mold of the Cobra or the Asp, but it's no slouch at fighting (probably better than either of those two), and certainly has enough range to make it a very useful in the pure exploration role.

I'm currently en route to SGR A* in one...

Explorer Anaconda still beats it in jump range, and can be better armed than DE.

If I was to be scooting about in or near the bubble hunting for UA (just for example), I would take a DBE
For long range exploration, the scoop sucks (in the bad way)

I use it for my PP work.
I got a FDL, but that does not hold any cargo in its current setup and to few if I changed that.
I had a Asp for the ferry PP missions, but it found it to be to sluggish (normally and in SC)
The Asp can carry more cargo but since the PP documents you can carry are limited that's no prob(I don't like paying for the fast track)
I feel the DB-ex ( at least for my flying style) has a higher survivability then the Asp.
That both offensive and defensive (armour is tough as nail's)
Its also a little easier to doge pirate's or opposing faction ships in SC.

Still have to test it in PvP though.

I use the DB Scout for a lot of my smuggling. It has such good heat tolerances that I can use Silent Running, boost, boost, then charge FSD and only by the last bit of the charging will I FINALLY hit 100% heat (I was about to get scanned while carrying two missions worth of illegal goods!).

As for the DB Explorer, I'll probably need to get back to you on that for how good it is on smuggling (though I suspect it to be just as good, or even just possibly a bit better!).

They're excellent mission runners and powerplay errand boy ships. 30Ly range fully fitted for combat with enough room for some cargo and a drone controller.

Asp fitted for exploration - 37.5ly (34.5ly with fuel)
DB fitted for exploration - 35.3ly (32.7ly with fuel)

I'm not seeing it.

.. and other than your path out and back into populated space (doing exploration) unless you're shooting yourself, no need for weapons. Just sayin.
