Ships Diamondback Scout Owners' Club

I've seen quite a few threads lately of people discussing their love for their ships. The Diamondback Scout is mine. While I know there are plenty of people who praise the DBS, I figured we could have a thread discussing all the things that make this ship so great.

Even with the 1.6/2.1 update and the increased AI difficulty, I'm still finding this amazing little ship so capable. I've taken out Elite Pythons, Condas, Corvettes, etc. With an A-rated DBS, you can easily stay on the ass of any ship, except those damn Eagles that have a small edge with their slight increased agility, but even they stand no chance.

Here's my DBS loadout.

And a couple of pictures

Nice setup, I'm about to sell my viper to buy a DBS. Personally, I love they look of this ship, the Explorer version also.

Interesting build :D Very similar to my Viper.

I love the agility of the DBS but I find that closing the distance with the NPCs can be a bit of a challenge given that then DBS has such a large hit box (say compared with the Viper). Any tips for how to close that gap without dropping shields?

If I'm tackling an NPC straight on, I drop the thrusters a little below the blue zone and thrust downwards while pitching up. The extra speed from the downwards thrust throws you back in the blue zone from velocity and it allows you to stay under them while they're trying to turn on you. With the extra agility of the DBS compared to most ships, you'll easily get behind them from that if you keep holding that maneuver.

As for the two ships that are more agile than the DBS, the Eagle and the Vulture, it requires a little bit different tactics. The main part that comes into play is that the DBS is significantly faster than both. Eventually you'll get into a jousting match with those two ships, so I just boost while pitching up, but keeping my throttle in the blue zone before doing so. The boost gives you a quick jolt of extra maneuverability and you'll quickly get behind them once the speed returns to the blue zone. I've experimented with FA-Off, but I've found that it's not all that necessary in the DBS.

For bigger ships, I've found that I'm much too fast for them and have to constantly speed up and down, but lost agility in the process at times, so I'll throw all pips to weapons and keep one in each engines and systems. It allows you to be just as agile, but at a slower speed, allowing you to just stay on their asses. Pip management has become an integral part of combat strategy after the improved AI from 1.6.

I'm sure keeping one's mass low helps maintain the agility of the DBS, but I've found that more mass doesn't hinder it all that much.

It's also been my understanding, based on only experience, that the DBS has a smaller hitbox than the viper, or at least one that's not as wide.

My DBS - The Rubber Ducky V

And it's loadout (via coriolis.io) - please note though that this is a pre-2.1 loadout. I've been busy trying to gain minor faction rep in LFT 37 so have been running about in a Cobra - although I will get back into the pilot's chair soon enough and tweak things for the current AI.

i love my DBScout after a few deaths in my python with 2.1 changes, i decided to go back to school in something less expensive :) and what a surprise the DBS was, i have been enjoying bounty hunting, us missions, minor smuggling, planet bashing.. and all with just a few quick tweaks to the loadout. i will not be selling this ship ever, i may jump back into a bigger ship when the need arises, but for the simple things.. she will remain my go too.

My DBS has become my go-to combat ship. In prior versions of the game, I typically either used a Viper (III and IV) or the Asp Explorer for combat, however after trying this bad boy out, it is hard for me to go back. With a fairly low rebuy cost, good amount of punch, and quick maneuverability this ship is awesome! The reason I have so much protection (both shields and hull) is because I'm not the most agile pilot there is.

THIS THREAD WAS MISSING :D

i fly a DBS for buckyball races, for BGS bountyhunting, and in combatzones. tough little ship. love it.

Awesome ship. Really comfortable heat profile, really agile, knows how to move around systems. Causes lots of ouchies with rail guns.

Got two "spare" I keep in the bubble with different loadouts and never feel bored getting in one. Very underrated ship.

Tried to buy one last night, and couldn't because I had cargo. [down]

Yeah. The internal space definitely leaves something to be desired, but, for me, I used to bounce back and forth between the DBS and the Viper MkIV because of the lack of cargo space, until I realized that I never even used the cargo space of the Viper because I'm mainly a combat explorer, which the DBS is perfect for, so it's the only ship I've been using lately.

Using one for Polonium hunting ATM decent range and great heat control although an additional slot for cargo would be nice ;)

I can't seem to find one! I've been looking for a DBS or DBX but haven't had any luck yet. I'm headed towards Wolf 406. I'm like 10 jumps away. Anyone know where I might find one if it isn't there? I'm on the Xbox.

I need something else other than the Cobra MkIV. It's not my style... I just need something I can use to work towards the Courier. I had a Cobra MkIII but I needed to change things up haha. I'd like to do a mix of combat and exploring. Are the DBS and DBX still viable for that with the new AI?

DBS lacks internals, DBE lacks speed (without engineer upgrades) :) ... but the DBS does very fine unmodified against the new AI, it is fast, nimble, has good hardpoint placements. you might only need to re-outfit for any new role (differently to the cobra mkIII). if you ask me - for gaining rank (for the courier) the cobra is probably the better ship, though.

Oh, I knew what I was getting into. But the default loadout is actually 0 cargo so I can't even buy it until I do something with my cargo I'm storing in my other ships. And I'm only holding onto cargo for Engineers.

Ahh I see. Thanks!

Off topic: I'm still fairly new and figuring everything thing out haha. What ship would be best for strictly combat in my price range? I currently have 4mil credits. I tried the Cobra MkIII but it wasn't working out for me after the update. That's why I was thinking about getting one of the Diamondbacks! Is that a good idea? I'd rather not waste my time haha!

Thanks!

The A modules can easily out double your current funds: https://coriolis.io/outfit/diamondback/2pataFal8das8f4272724240505050540---.AwRj4yKA.Aw1-kA==
I would go for a Viper at that point: https://coriolis.io/outfit/viper/2p5t5F5l8dasdf227272424050540---.AwRj4yyA.Aw1+kA==

But the DBS would certainly be an upgrade beyond.

Even cheap DBS builds are often better than Vipers, because they can get the same performance from some modules without A rating them as they are a larger class. For example:

https://coriolis.io/outfit/diamondb...---.Iw1-kA==.IwBhrSukg===?bn=Cheap RES Farmer

3.5 million, very similar performance to the viper, with slightly more armour for slightly less shields, but it is still better thanks to superior agility, boost speed, and heat management. If you can use fixed, it also has perfect hardpoint placement.

And of course it still has more potential as it is upgraded.
