Diamonds as a commodity?

While surfing the web I ran across this: http://m.space.com/23138-diamond-planet-super-earth-discovery.html

It turns out that white dwarfs when cooled have a diamond core! Makes sense given that at end of life main sequence stars produce carbon and the slowly cooling white dwarf environment is perfect for diamond formation. Given the many industrial and other uses for diamonds, there could easily be a demand at industrail, high tech and high pop wealthy systems.

I can see adding diamonds to the commodity list and then having some of the outposts produce it from surface mining. This would make the brown dwarfs and burned out stars much more interesting.

I can imagine some great GalNet articles about developing the tech and then mining the diamonds in almost unlimited supply.

Chocolate is missing too :(

It's not missing, it was added in 1.1 after breakthrough discoveries over at nasa.

Diamonds are common as muck out there in the real universe, more common than here on Earth (which are controlled by the several businesses, artificially controlling prices) Not much money in diamonds really.. ;)

Sterilized waste is an actual commodity. Not all commodities need to be expensive.
Maybe Industrial diamonds would make sense as an Industrial material, and Natural diamonds as something the wealthy worlds consume? (like Gold, Silver, Palladium already)

I think it was something like Rare Gem Stones in Elite and have been wondering for a while if they would be making a come back. I've bumped in to T9's looking for Red Crystals in the past but have never found a source.

I think it makes sense to add gems stones, as you say, sub cats in man made and natural (luxury) stones would be good. But...

Why do we already have Platinum, that can be mined (I understand) but oddly NEVER purchased in known space. Same for Painite, which is a rare gem-stone, so rare it does not seem to exist in game, apart from in-name.

I know for a fact that extremely high grade rubies are used in (some) red-wavelength lasers. Diamonds are more common than their price makes them seem, but yeah, it'd make more sense to have them as a commodity too. Something that surprises me more is that there's barely any rare-earth metals as commodities. Where's the samarium? Where's the neodymium? Where's the iridium? Where's the osmium? Hyper-useful metals and rare-earth elements that aren't available as trading commodities.

Diamonds as a cheap industrial commodity makes sense. Once interplanetary expansion happens I suspect the companies that artificially inflate the price of diamonds will lose their grip on the diamond supply.
