Did Elite in VR kill my GTX 1080?

I was referring to the new setting in the 2.2 beta, I forgot it was the beta.

Did you reset the nVidia 3d app settings to default?
Make sure ED graphics settings are vanilla?

If it's not hardware then it's software. If it's only in ED then it's a ED issue. If it's a ED issue then there has to be a setting somewhere that's tweaked incorrectly. If everything in ED is 100% correct then it's Thargoids.

I'm starting to suspect the Thargoids. They don't want me playing 2.2 :p

I've tried setting Elite's graphics to the 'Low' preset, and it had no apparent effect on the load the game was putting on my system.

I will also try setting Nvidia's app settings to default, but I'm not optimistic about that. I haven't changed any setting in the Nvidia 3D app on this PC, so if something changed, it did so by itself. I will test it when the launcher gets done downloading 2.2.

I agree it has to be a setting that's causing the game to do something incredibly taxing and unnecessary, but at this point I haven't a clue what it could be. I've been PC gaming since the Commodore 64, and building my own gaming PC's for 16 years. I've never seen this effect before.

All I know is, Elite was working fine. Then I installed the Oculus. The load while running Elite increased, but I expected that from VR. I was able to enjoy Elite in VR for about a week. Then the shutdowns started. It was roughly around the same time that the Oculus app updated it's version to 1.9, but that may be coincidence. Now Elite puts a massive load on my system all by itself, with no Oculus software or device installed. It's quite baffling.

I really do appreciate all the helpful suggestions, though! :)

Hmm, it ran okay on the 373.06 drivers for a week before the problem started, so I doubt that would help. However, I am getting desperate and running out of ideas, so I just may try that. There's also some new drivers, 375.63, to try as well. When 2.2 finishes installing. The launcher estimates about 9 hours....

I grabbed the new nVidia drivers last night, along with 2.2. Only had 10 minutes in ED this morning, just enought to see the new station menus and fit a fighter bay and Condor to my Anaconda.
Nothing exploded. Yet. Can't vouch for the F63 this evening though!

"My Anaconda don't want none unless you got Con, Hon!

LOL! That actually got a giggle out of me this morning!

Anyway, I don't know if it was the latest Nvidia drivers (375.63), the complete reinstall of the launcher and game at the same time, or the 2.2 update, but Elite seems to have returned to normal operation. At least in 2D mode. It still gets a little hotter than Deus Ex: MD at ultra settings, and way hotter than Witcher 3, but I think running SMAA in Elite probably makes up the difference. Are most people running SMAA?

I'm still a bit scared to install the Oculus again.

Update: I've started running the Oculus again and so far, so good. I'm trying to be more conservative with settings. I'm running the preset High settings, with bloom, depth of field, and blur shut off. However I have bumped textures and FX Quality to High, and set pixel density to 1.25. Everything else is default for the High setting. GPU temperature is around 60 in space, climbing as high as 67 in stations.

I have not modified my HUD color, or enabled ASW. I'm trying to keep things as default as possible, because I'm not certain what happened before, and I'm not certain which step I took corrected the problem. I don't even know if the ridiculous load that Elite was putting on my GPU was the cause of the shutdowns. With aggressive fan settings, the temperatures were still not getting anywhere near thermal limits, and it would still shut down. It's entirely possible the new, beefier PSU corrected that issue, but I'm not eager to test the theory.

The game doesn't look as pretty as it did with the set up I had before, but I'll take ugly and stable over being unable to play any day. :)
