Did Frontier kill the old GalNet site and articles recently?

If you follow the narrative like a normal person, you probably just use the ingame feed. But the narrative has been going on for quite some time now, so what if you wanted to look up old storylines or GalNets from longer than a month ago? You have to look them up elsewhere.

The newest GalNet website is what the launcher links to, on elitedangerous.com. It's probably the one you're most familiar with, looks like this:

Only thing is, it's not much better than ingame. Navigation to old articles is very janky, you have to repeatedly click a button to go back a few articles at a time. More importantly though, it doesn't have any of the articles from before December 3306, which is the majority of them. Also it took me two tries and 20+ minutes to even get that far back, so even if the old articles were there, good luck getting to them before you grow old yourself.

There used to be another site, community.elitedangerous.com. It was also janky, but at least it had a functional date-selector, and it had all the articles since release. If you Google for GalNets on a particular topic, you'll probably see a bunch of listings from this site for related articles, which is super nice for people dipping into older lore. I was writing a post about how the Thargoids probably aren't trying to murder all of us, so I wanted to cite a detail from the GalNet on the first station attacks. Google did the job. Thanks, Google. Or you could go to the Wiki to get a chronological overview of a storyline, and use the links to view the full articles if you wanted more details.

Clicking on those links now just redirects you to the homepage of the new site. You can't view an official source for that article anymore. Now you can't fact check me on how the Thargoids were keeping the death count to a minimum! Mwahahahaha!

I'm not sure when this change occured, but no more than a few days ago. Thankfully, people have backed up the old articles, so preservation isn't an issue. But this change really sucks for anyone trying to discuss the lore, or anyone who wants to get into previous storylines, many of which are still relevant today. The Thargoids, Starship One, the Rochesters, Blaine, Sirius, etc. The wiki did a great job of providing an overview of these storylines over the years, while linking to the full details of each article. I really don't envy the busywork needed to replace that. This site was the backbone of a lot of stuff, and the reason why the flaws of the ingame feed and the current site could be worked around.

It's still showing up on Google, so I assume the old site is still up, just with this redirect blocking access. So hey, if anyone from Frontier is reading, could you...not do that? Thanks.

Here is a useful GalNet archive right back to the first day....

The frank-heinrich one is what I used to use, definitely useful for being able to save a single page to CTRL-F through. Inara is a bit of a pain to navigate through though and can't have articles be linked to directly except by page number. It's just unfortunate to not have an official source anymore, plus heinrich has gone down in the past and maybe could again, it looks inactive.

The redirects have been reverted. There will be an info post incoming.

Once it's up I'm going to lock this thread, just to avoid any confusion.
Again just to thank Ozzy for being on this but to also share my own little voice on the matter -

We're really sorry for the confusion and inconvenience caused with this. I've taken the feedback and we've had the necessary discussions to get the redirects reverted - Bruce is now going to take the baton and get information on what happened here out a little later today.

Big o7!
