As always, it's better explained in videos. Here's one that gives you the basics. It looks OK apart from one or two minor mistakes and a misleading banner.

In case you don't know, you can make more money by mining platinum because you can sell it without having to pay for it, so 100% profit. Also, it's the profit that counts towards your elite rank (in case that's your goal), so you get the rank quicker from mining.
