did I just pay money to gimp my ship??

alright Im in a Lakon-6 transporter and realized my jump range sucks. I therefore went to the next fitting service to upgrade my FSD drive. I selected one for about 100k credits, the fitting screen tells me that I get 12k for selling the old one and I pay 100k for the new drive. Fine, reasonable investment. I buy it and now I realize my jump range is down to 4 LY, from the 12 LYs I had before. WTH??

How does it make sense to actually pay for something that is much worse than what I had before on the ship??

how can this be solved? do I now have to blow up my ship to get at least my old drive back?
Is this intended??

You can buy back your old equipment ... also if relogging doesn't fix the range, you should probably check what the equipment does in the future.

and how can I buy it back, I would appreciate your help

In the fitting screen the only other drive I see is for 500k, and this gives me a whopping 7LY ranges, so about half as what I had before. Im sorry, but this doesnt make sense at all.

When you hover over each upgrade it will show you the changes it will make on the panel to the right of it.

It looks like you purchased a lower class than you had before. You do need to be careful. Just because it is more expensive doesn't mean it is better. Some people buy the lower class because of weight issues on the ship. It does make sense but not until you fully understand the logic of it. I didn't get it for weeks either :)

You can buy it back if you haven't logged off or moved out of the station.

If you have not exited out of the station where you bought the FSD, you can still buy it back: there is a buyback option, else the option will no longer be there.

Also, before buying the FSD, if you select an FSD, the Jump Range will be shown on the right side of the screen.
It will show the Unladen/Current/Laden jump ranges.
Also do not buy FSD that are of a lower Class level than your ship's current level.

Take it as a lesson to be aware for future purchases :D

I hgad logged off because I had hoped it had not saved. so I dont see any option to buy my old drive back.

Any action that you do that involves shop transactions will already be saved after you've commited to it.

yes, I take it as a lesson, that wont happen to me again for sure..

FD prepare for a sh..itstorm when hundreds of other newbs who enter the game freshly make the same mistake that I just did. Im sorry, but if some equipment costs like 100k and I get 10k for selling my old equipment, that kind or implies the new one should be better, right??

I guess my best option now is to sell my ship and buy the same ship again. This will at least give me my FSD back. of course it means I lose all my other upgrades, but if a 7LW FSD costs 500k, I guess my old 12LY drive will be a few mil. Common sense?? no.

You'll need to find a station selling your part. The good news is there are many more stations selling more parts than there were before so it shouldn't take long. High Tech and Industry with large populations are the best choices.

You can search by type and population in the galaxy map so you can quickly find the ones you need.

Expect a manual of some description with the release candidate, if players then don't read the manual....;)

If ED releases without one though, I agree with you - it's asking for trouble.

No. I had the type6 before moving to Asp and the prices between the classes were similar and don't forget the trade-in will also include the 500k you used for the one you have.

Im not sure I understand. So lets say I take off with my 4LY range and find a station that sells the lakon-6 stock drive that I sold for 12k, how much will it cost me?

When I instead sell my gimped type 6 in the station Im in, I get 300k parts exchange and it should contain the stock FSD, right? why is that not the better option?

Well, this game pulls a lot of bull excretion in many areas, but I don't think this is the case. Equipment has the price it has, but it may suit you or not depending on your mass requirements, power availability, etc. Don't use price as your guide, use the compare function and look at the little arrows pointing up or down.

The new one *was* better, just for a different class of ship. Unfortunately. Hopefully by release FDEV would've come up with a more intuitive shop interface. However the compare button before buying is invaluable

If you dont find the correct class fsd for your ship anymore you could also self destruct and deselect the fsd at the insurance screen. this should give you back the stock fsd (but the money spend for the new fsd would be wasted)

edit: perhaps buying the cheapest fsd you can find before will also bring back the money.

Sidewinder = Class 2 FSD. Start with an E rated drive and upgrade it to a B or an A rated Class 2 FSD and your jump range will increase.

Cobra = Class 4 FSD. Start with an E rated drive and upgrade it to a B or an A rated Class 4 FSD and your jump range will increase.

Each ship has its own Class size and you need to check this before making a purchase. If you put a Class 2 FSD into a Class 4 slot, then your jump range will decrease.

Also, a Class 2 Rating A FSD Drive will cost more than a Class 4 Rating E drive. This is because the A rated drive is better quality. Basically it's like getting a top spec motorbike engine and fitting it to a truck, it's a great engine - but it won't move the truck very far!

(Why the game allows you to put Class 2 FSD's into a Class 4 slot though, is another question entirely....)

Sometimes it IS the better option to sell the ship you screwed up, and just rebuy the stock version. I did that early in Gamma when I sold the Basic Discovery Scanner on my Cobra for more cargo space, only to discover that at the time it was hard to find that module again. So I went back to my free sidewinder, sold the Cobra, and rebought it and reinstalled all the upgrades I'd already gotten.

Good explanation.

As for why the game allows you to do that, it's one of the features I really like about this game: it actually allows you to screw up. I find games where I can fail, and fail big, are much more fun than games that are simple "you win" buttons in a pretty package, where failure is rarely an option.

Anyone who has worked their way up to a Lakon and makes this mistake can hardly be considered a noob. Foolish would perhaps be a better word.

Let's say you buy the 'right' FSD this time and its price is 100k. When you buy it you will have a refund of 400k into your account.

If my memory serves me correctly, when I fitted the top drive to my Type6 it was around a million but the lesser 'correct' FSD's were a few hundred thousand. It was the leap to the "A" class that was the expense.

You should be able to find the right one pretty quickly and get back on your way. You could also destroy the ship but you'll lose that 500k.

Always, always look at the right side panel (still part of the purchasing panel) to see what differences an upgrade will make. There are genuine reasons they sell lesser FSD's. I purchased one once because of mass issues while I was gearing up.
