Did I waste my money?

I didn't even knew we could use the side panel, I always clicked systems and plotted a route. Still my question about the max fuel per jump stands.

Just to be sure, I upgraded my ship to reduce mass and increase jump range so I could make jumps between systems when they are further apart but after that I discovered the max fuel per jump. I remember when I tried to make longer jump the massage was something like "jump exceed max fuel per jump" so does it mean that my increased jump range is useless since I have the same max fuel per jump?

When you plan your jump first without cargo and add cargo after the plan then this can happen. Loading cargo/adding weight by refuelling reduces your jump range. And then you get this message. When planning a jump you can use the Navigation-tab in galaxy map and the slider there that lets you set your cargo load and you will see how that changes your jump range.

Max fuel per jump changes depending on what class/rating FSD you use. Am pretty sure only the two cheapest FSD's have the same max fuel per jump. What FSD did you upgrade to?

I didn't upgrade my FSD. I just upgraded other stuff to lower the mass thus increasing the jump range. The question I'm trying to answer is what use is an increased jump range if the max fuel per jump limits the range anyway??

Well you are in a basic ship with a tiny tank. To avoid the issue upgrade the FSD, then focus of decreasing the ships weight if necessary. If you where in a Cobra or larger, you wouldn't have an issue with the stock FSD, apart from the Clipper and Orca, the bigger ships have huge fuel tanks.

If the system is over 20, you have to go to map and select it from there, its only not listed in your contact list, but you can jump there. Max fuel per jump limits the range, nothing else. The jump range is calculated from that. If you increase your mass, you increase fuel needed per jump and that decrease your jump range, this is the formula.

So my 8.08LY jump range is exactly what it says and I can now do these jumps even if the max fuel per jump is still the same?

So I've been upgrading my hauler and it now lists a jump range of 34 LY. However.. I can't seem to actually make a jump of over 20? Did I waste my money upgrading it as much as I did?

No because you can't waste money upgrading stuff, just sell it again.

With longer jump ranges you can probably jump to the max while fully laden also, so not really a waste even though you're not getting the full benefit.

Fuel use per light-year in not linear. If you double the distance, you more than double the fuel usage. This is the difference between fastest and most economical routes in the map. Even if you cannot jump the maximum theoretical distance of your ship due to fuel-per-jump limits, you will have more routes fall into the "efficient" zone. This will reduce fuel consumption overall.

To raise the fuel-per-jump limit you need B or A grade FSD IIRC.
