Did no beta. First impressions from LIVE

Greetings CMDRs,

I avoided beta on purpose, mostly due to not to spoil the fun of final release. Now when live is finally here - first impressions seeing from the unbiased POV.

Launch day passed under "failure" sign. Server issues, later connection issues didn't allow me to play. The farthest I went was almost spawn - seen rotating ship and then error. Oh well, usual day one things after big update. Postponed to the next evening, which was yesterday. No issues this time, no delays, I could jump in no problem.

Plan was to get Krait Phantom, outfit for exploration and see what jump range I can squeeze from it. Took my Black Adder personal shuttle and went shopping. Nearest 15% discount dealer was 230 LYs away, just 6 jumps. Course set and off we go.

First thing I noticed - the lighting. Space got some colors, but it's subtle change. More like additional effect rather than totally new layer. For me it's not so flat, it got depth and some smoothness. Second thing with lights - stars. Wow, they are now really great when dropping from FSD. First you get big bright and glowing object that fades into star itself, with surface details, plasma arcs and glow effect. Especially nice with yellow stars. So far I like the new lighting system, the more I see it, the more it looks nice.

En route for Krait I tried new scanning mechanics. At first glance nothing works, constant error messages about "you cannot do that" or "this doesn't work in this mode". Luckily there is a quick intro guide that I skimmed. What I noticed was that really nice "feature" of: "to scan the target press unbound and proceed with...". So after pressing unbound I could switch with unbound so I could focus with unbound to perform a scan. Really? was it that difficult to predefine those buttons?

Anyway, I arrived at my destination and bought Phantom for little above than 31M Cr. Since Adder is small one I couldn't use my G5 FSD and had to use D-rated unengineered modules, supported with 3H gFSDb. Weird build gave me over 40 LYs range so way back was set to just 8 jumps. Nice. I had power issues and had to switch off gFSDb for the take off. After 1 jump and enabling booster I had 6 more jumps, so total 7. Very nice, wonder what value I get with proper light build.

Oh, and while buying Phantom I sold exploration data gathered while flying there. Starting system, next 6 were just honk-scoop-jump, one system I scanned at ~90% completion. Data went for nearly 150k. Massive increase in payout for such short trip.

Arrived home, performed exploration outfitting. Build is:
PP - 4D
TH - 5D
FSD - 5A + G5 range + mass manager
LS - 4D
PD - 2D
SS - 6D

6A fuel scoop
5H gFSDb
3D shields
1C DSS + G2 expanded probe scanning radius

Jump range is 65 / 69 LYs.

Nothing fancy, quick scrap up of what I had for single purpose - to get to certain destination asap. Distance - 4.8k LYs. Before log out I made 3k of just jump-honk-scoop-jump. Goal is get to my destination, perform a full system scan and planet probe, get back with just honking and see how much credits it gives.

From little testing I made with new scanner I must say it's massive improvement. Finally it feels like proper exploration, one must actively search and scan signals to determine what the object is. No need to fly all over the place. Plus - it gives more profit. Flying will be required just for high value targets to probe them. Highly approved change.

The only issue with new scanner I see is that you cannot immediately spot WW or ELW just after honk. Or you may... haven't tried.

Anyway, while jumping toward my goal I was admiring new lighting feature. Not only stars look different. Close space to them is altered as well. High star glow alters the views. Jumping near red star gives reddish glow to surrounding space, flying few Ls awy and that glow fades showing more black. And all colors are now more soft. Really eye pleasing.

All right, that's all for now from short encounter with new content. Solid 8/10 and rising. Upcoming days will provide additional data and we will see if the verdict changes.

Cheers.

Nice read! Spot on, I experience the update almost the same.

One comment, the Phantom can (MKII can't) handle 4D thrusters and adds another 1.5 ly to that already lovely jump range :)

Great writeup and nice to see the viewpoint from someone new to the update.

Only thing missing - considering you spent some time commenting on the way the game looks now - what's your gaming platform? PC? Console? Monitor? VR?

My issue atm is not the changes themselves but How do I interact with the whole Beyond series without using YouTube and watching someone else's adventure? I want the adventure in my game.

I've been around the bubble and engineered stuff with Ram Tah and the others why aren't they contacting me as the start of say The Guardian adventure? Where is the GalNet news in game hinting at me to <go do something> in a topic I'm interested in?

I'll persevere a little longer and try to figure it out, but I know the moment I throw the towel in and go watch YouTube it will reveal all and leave me just going through the motions (aka grind not adventure).

For what it's worth, this is why I'm so happy to see the Codex implemented. It is raw right now but for me it holds no end of possibilites of persistent NPCs, non-linear missions, injected rumours ... ED is for now still sandboxy but I think we'll end up seeing more of the kind of quests you're talking about, not least because in-game 'training' is much more fun when you're operating in the real galaxy, rather than in an off grid simulator.

I also didn't do the beta and I also like the changes quite a bit. A bit raw in a couple of places but I still don't see Beyond as "ED just went Beyond" more as "now we can go Beyond". A free season after all, this definitely keeps me playing. Now, about that squadron .. (gnosis)

You can, quite easily once you get used to the filtered spectral analysis at the bottom of the screen. As you tune back and forth across the bar, the bottom right comes up telling you what section you're tuned to. If there's a spike in the ELW or WW sections, then bingo, you've got an ELW or WW. Once you get used to where these sections broadly are, you won't even need check the label.

PC on 24" LCD.
Apologies for the omission. Been so excited with first visual changes that forgot about platform mention. And I must add that my rig isn't the best one, GTX 680 (I think, lost track on card names long ago), single digit RAM and aging MB. Hard to admit but I can't give you exact specs as I don't care about that much. It runs no issues so it's ok.

@Vandaahl
Probably you're right. My build wasn't min/max at all. I just took modules I had, outfitted Phantom quickly, saw 65/69 LY range and it made me smile. For current goal it's enough. When I get back, and I expect it to be Friday, I'll start doing engineers as I haven't unlocked them apart from Farseer. I want to get some blueprints to further lighten the build and break 70 LYs min range. For now non optimal build is double than I had in AspX when Iwent to SagA*.

Thanks :) Wasn't after exact specs, just broadly the platform. So I'm guessing with that rig you're not running Ultra either? I wonder if the graphics changes are more or less pronounced depending on various other in-game settings.. and whether that's why some people love the changes and others not so much.

TBH I don't even know what are my GFX settings. It looks nice, runs smooth. The only gripe I have is with small letters but I have manually increased FOV for the more far seat feeling. I see more cockpit around the console, more roof as my cam is more back into the seat. Even with that lack of knowledge I instantly spot the GFX difference. Probably with higher end machine they could be more distinct. And it may be the reason why some people dislike it - too much of a change. With my old rig changes are visible and more subtle.

From my POV - good change.
