Did the crashed Thargoid ships always scan you?

I never visited them before 2.4, but I've seen Youtube footage and I don't recall them ever actually scanning anyone. But I dropped in to see a couple today and both times they scanned me. Or at least something did, but there was nothing on radar and no contacts.
