Did Trading Ruin Your Game (it did mine)

Well, you did that to yourself! Instead of having fun trading, you immediately sought out rares, had a friend show you exactly what route to take, and then minimized focus on actual flying by installing a docking computer. If the game had a "win" button, you would've pressed it. The game is now boring as you feel no sense of accomplishment - all you've done is mindlessly followed instructions and focused on getting from A to be B as quickly as possible. I'd be bored too, in your shoes. Why the hurry? And why are you striving for the multi-million credit ASP? To make combat.... easier?? Don't you see, YOU'RE making the game boring my removing all sense of accomplishment, learning and challenge!

My advice: wipe your save and start again. And don't rely on friends or 3rd party tools for your in-game adventures. It's much more rewarding and fun. Good luck to you!

Whatever challenge and satisfaction exists in trading, you completely nullified by using out of game tools and sources. Those trade tools are in essence the equivalent of spoilers, giving you content (where the good trade is at) that you could have discovered yourself.

Heres what happened....

I'm writing this on my laptop as the docking computer in my Type 6 lands (yes, that's how boring this game has become for me)...

1. Started with Eagle (from pre-buy). Wouldn't make very much difference if I started with sidewinder.
2. Hit signal sources near by spawn system and killed a few random "wanted" pirates. Quickly made enough (about 14K) for the K-Warrant Scanner.
3. Camped Nav Beacon at the closest anarchy system to my spawn of LHS 3446. It's no secret, its well known now. Use K-Scanner to scan everyone, and anyone, i mean anyone, with a bounty: BLAST EM. Repeat process until have enough for a decently kitted out Viper.
4. Sold Eagle, outfitted Viper with 4 x lasers, returned to same nav beacon and kill kill kill. Along the road, encounter more than several heated battles (usually to the death) with other players. Sometimes a guy kill steals from me too many times, I sneak up on his 6 and blast him to death as he is engaging another NPC and cant defend himself. Sometimes the same thing happens to me. Encounter much rage and much joy during these times. highs and lows! ex WarThunder buddies join the game and we all camp same beacon and use teamspeak for voice comms. Other players have no idea we are working as a small squadron and are quickly blown to pieces by all 3 or 4 of us when they make just one of us mad. Average player has no idea that coordinated team play is going on and the surprise is awesome (to us, anyway).... Repeat until have enough for Type-6 with max cargo and still a million credits left over for trade capital.

(Unknowingly, the fun and rage and joy of the game is about to end for me...)

5. Buy Type-6. Remove all weapons, fit class A FSD and class D everything else, equip with 96 cargo slots. Buy my first ever docking computer. Max out cargo hold flying 2 x jump, each way, round trip trade routes. Use the crowd sourced websites that tell you which stations and routes and cargo to buy and sell. Cheating? i don't think so. Normal income is 220K in 20 minutes. Thats 660K in 1 hour. Repeat repeat repeat.
6. Friend shows me a spreadsheet he made of a rares trading route. I jump on it. Without side trading (i.e., taking "normal" goods along with the rares) it makes approx 780K in exactly 60 minutes. If I take side goods as told by the website, the run makes 850K in 65 minutes (takes an extra 5 minutes to look up on my laptop which goods to make for each leg). Repeat Repeat.
7. Game is ruined.

On my best days at camping Ngaliba Nav Beacon (anarchy) in my multi million dollar combat only viper, I would maybe, maybe make 120 K in an hour of camping. And that 120 K bounty was often spread over all 3 x systems, and any alliance bounty was worth 0 to me since it was way way to far to collect it.

Now, doing the rare run, as stated above, I make 850 K in 1 hour. That is is about 7 TIMES more per hour than I would make bounty hunting. But its 1000 times less fun. No combat. No yelling YES as I blow a human player who kill stole to pieces, hoping he had 300K of uncollected bounties he lost. No more screaming **** after another player did the same to me. No more playing in team speak with my squad buddies as we all covered each others six from players and NPCs. Now we all basically fly around alone, though still talking on teamspeak (but now about how boring the game is instead of yelling for fire support on our tail...)

Now, I tell myself, Im just going to do this until I can get a decent ASP, fit for combat, and go back to my old nav beacon as a squad again. But I think a decently combat capable ASP will cost about 10 million. Then I need at least 2 more million in cash to cover insurance costs when something bad happens (so I'm not like the guy in the other thread who quit the game when he lost his Asp in PvP, with 0 credits in his pocket....) 12 million in assets (assuming I sell the Type-6) needed. Thats 14 hours, yeah FOURTEEN HOURS, of running this rare route. How long can i do it? 3 hours a day? thats nearly 5 days. Doesn't sound like much, but when the fun has already been sapped.... Feels more like actual work, something I normally get paid real money for...

Anyway, this has been my experience since starting on Dec 16th.

/rant over

Any others have this experience?
It's pretty simple; spread those five days of mindnumbingly boring trade grinding across the next five weeks and spend the remainder of your game time doing things that you find more appealing. No one said that it's a race to the Asp.

Been there OP, what happens is your brain starts to accept it. What was so dull that you thought you couldn't possibly stand to do for another 10 hours or whatever become routine and you just keep on.

One hop becomes 10, minutes turn to hours, then days and before you know it you've got a ton of creds.

I am not being sarcastic here either, that's my experience of running trade routes (not the rares), the psychology is odd, a sort of compulsive OCD appears, you'll just be sat there with a secondary computer doing something else while you mindlessly grind and the time will start to fly by. What seemed excruciatingly painful your brain just learns to accept, it "switches off" in a way allowing you to keep on... and on... and on...

So if you don't enjoy trading, in a game that allows you to be either a trader, a pirate, a vigilante, a bounty hunter, an explorer and any number of other things.

WHY did you chose to do trading ? and how is it the games fault you decided to do something boring in a game where that is only one career path when you where already on a career path you enjoyed.

the solution is simple, sell the Type 6 and buy a new combat ship and go back to bounty hunting or faction wars. Instead you go to the forus and whine because " I chose to do something I think is boring and now the game is boring because I'm still doing the boring instead of doing what I enjoy".

I don't get it, how do you only make 120k an hour bounty hunting?!

1 decent ranked Anaconda is worth more than that, 6 vipers of master or above is 150k and id say you can kill more than that in 10-15mins.

Very low amount to make, i think you are either ruining profits by fighting with too many allies or getting the maths a bit wrong ;)

Thanks for sharing your story!

My story goes like this.

1. Got the game in beta 2.5

2. Did some missions to earn enough money for an Eagle.

3. Did some more missions to upgrade my Eagle.

4. Tried out some bounty hunting. Struggled at first but enjoyed the learning curve.

5. Traded enough to buy a basic viper.

6. Did bounty hunting until wipe. Enjoyed it a lot.

7. Wipe - with credits still intact - bought the viper again but realised NPCs got buffed and I needed to learn again how to fight.

8. Ditched the viper and tried a cobra; found combat even harder.

9. Decided it was time to try mining. Found it dull. I knew I would but tried it anyway to eliminate all doubt.

10. Turned my cobra into a pure trade ship and traded up to a t6.

11. Traded enough to understand how it worked and earn enough credits to buy a pimped out viper. Kept my t6 to trade on the side and supplement what was a meagre income - bounty hunting is much better now.

12. Learned how to do well against moderate ai.

13. Decided it was time to try PvP before the next wipe.

14. Fought a few players in anarchy space. Learned tons about how to fight. Upgraded my viper and totally improved my skills.

15. Got my first anaconda kill.

16. Wipe - gamma started.

17. Explored a few systems to earn early credits.

18. Explored around 20+ high tech systems to learn where I could get upgrades from - this was before FD buffed availability.

19. Found a decent little trade route. Earned enough to buy my first cobra trader.

20. Earned enough to buy my t6. Found Ho Hsi. Nice in system trade routes. Named it my new home.

21. Made decent earnings, enough to buy a fully A class, beast of a viper. Avoided bounty hunting due to rep issues.

22. Found out about rare trading.

23. Rare traded up to an Asp.

24. Continued rare trading but also did bounty hunting for fun and, now, decent reward.

25. Game launched, friend got the game.

26. Spent a few nights giving friend advice so he could progress. Did bounty hunting with friend at nav beacon in anarchy. Lots of fun.

27. Friend now has enough cash to buy an Asp.

28. Big break from the game due to holiday season, spent with family; loved every minute of it.

29. Tonight I'll be playing and will be buying a t7 to replace my t6. I'll trade enough to make the cost back, in between bounty hunting with my friend for fun.

30. Next target, enough cash to buy a Python. Which I'll trade and hunt with. Can't wait.

31+ wings will be introduced, allowing my friend and I to properly play together. Conflicts and missions should hopefully be improved, giving us more content. Future is bright. We intend to eventually explore and find conflicts to take part in, to make a difference.

Not one moment felt like a grind. I've had loads of fun and still have a lot to play for.

same happens to me. problem is

when you dont play for 2 - 3 days - and want to go back - you start fearing this boringness. i cant go back at that times in need a few days unti i gathered back some interest...

my brain dotn wants to be switched off - it struggles and fights with me, i must convince it with new goals and so on.. when you are in the zone of trading I advise to do as much as possible because when youre out your brain hates you and elite and it does everything that you cant go back for a longer time!!

im not kidding.. i struggle with this since beta..

' or getting the maths a bit wrong?'

just taking your number shere:

150k / 6 = 25k

60 / 15 = 4

25k * 4 = 100k

seems you got the numbers wrong.. its still in that 100k * 1.x region...

your point there 23 - how many hours compared to the other 29 points went into this?

your point there 23 - how many hours compared to the other 29 points went into this?

Enough to afford an Asp.

My friend used rare trading to do the same. He probably plays 2-3 nights a week or so. Only played since launch.

Rare trading is still a very good way to bridge the gap between cobra/t6 up to the Asp.

The difference is, I spent most of my time rare trading by bounty hunting with rare goods in my hold; I'd buy a supply, go out and hunt for an hour, come back to another station, buy some more. I'd do this until my hold was near to full, then do the trade run for around 900k to 1m.

I found it a lot of fun.

As I said, no grinding. I've mixed my time up and have progressed at a rate I've enjoyed. Whenever there's been a problem, like trade being broken, I've found something else to do. Now trading is working again, I'll be doing some more of that between hunting.

My overall point was, it's possible to enjoy the game without grinding yourself into boredom.

WHY did you chose to do trading ?

I think it's to do with the feeling of progression. I'm pretty sure for most people the overarching goal is the progression to a bigger ship. Sure what you do in between changes but the pursuit of a better ship and/or equipment is always there behind the scenes.

Trading is simply, by far, the most effective way of achieving that. You're not trading because you enjoy it, it's a means to an end. It's the "necessary evil" that's required for you to get where you want to be, the issue of course being that ideally trading wouldn't be seen as an "evil".

And on a semi-related note this for me is why people get so upset about exploits in ED enabling insta-billionaires, almost like going to Disney Land and queueing for hours while some sod walks right to the front.

Although not identical, I have had a very similar experience. This is why I have stated in the past that SOLO should be removed from the game, especially since I feel there is NO MEANINGFUL MULTIPLAYER EXPERIENCE.

I hold out and keep playing ED in hope for a better tomorrow. Trading is too easy. Right now, I have my aspirations on a Lakon Type 9 to take full advantage of trading for maximum profits.

So you believe it will be a more meaningful experience for solo type players to get blasted to pieces by squadrons coordinating over teamspeak? Well, it might make the game more fun to them but what about the rest? This would completely shift the whole focus of elite to multiplayer - which is amazingly pointless in a galaxy consisting of millions of solar systems.
.
What people are forgetting is how BIG this game is. Forget the thought of human CMDRs playing a major role in your gaming experience. This game is supposed to work around NPCs in those millions of solar systems. The instances are tiny and there's like a hand full of players. It'd be a major mistake to balance gameplay around the multiplayer aspect - that's a minority portion of the game.

Erm, if you find trading boring and another part of the game to be lots of fun, don't trade?

Am I missing something?
