Engineers Difference between Sensor and Detail Surface Scanner

Hello,
I know sensor is used to scan stellar body for exploring and I know DSS is used to make extra money from exploring.
So I wanted to scan things long range, but I also want to lose weight wherever I can.
What is the diff between the two in terms of what is actually scanning the stellar body when I have both of them?
If I make the sensor light weight, but long range DSS will i be able to scan stellar bodies further than I do now?
Do they both have to be long range to work?

thank you

So, they are different by their use :
- Sensors : detects nearby objects such as other ships, asteroids, canisters... within sensors range (a few kilometers max). Also detects the ground surface...
- Detailed surface scanner : detects more details on the surface of a stellar body (star or planet) than the discovery scanner, such as materials, atmosphere characteristics... increase the value of the scan. Operates as an upgrade of the disco scanner.

Yes !

No

If you want to maximise your jump range, D rate the sensors and lightweight it. For the DDS, it depends on your exploration style... there is a topic on that somewhere below in thes section of the forum (edit : it's there)...
