Differences between Earth now and Earth in Elite/3303

Begrudgingly, I spent the last few days gaining some Fed rank (as an Imperial pilot) so that I could finally see Sol.

It's definitely a different world - as an Irish person it was very interesting to see that Elite reckons Northern Ireland is going to be a thriving urban hub, Dublin is going to completely disappear with the main city in the south appearing to be Limerick.

Interestingly, London is also quite dark. Seems the current capitals have no place in a Federation-controlled Earth. I guess there's an Alliance controller who's Irish, and somehow managed to have the 'posh' Dublin accent ... :D

So what about everyone else here, notice any odd differences between the parts of the world you know well, and how they are represented in Elite?

Earth had rough times in the stacks of retconned lore :)

Now I wonder if the light map was placed deliberately, or is an artefact of procedural generation on top of the base map.

Most notably, the Arctic should be lit during the Northern Summer, I was considering to submit a bug report before. I do wonder whether the rest of the solar system's positions are accurate.

Yes I definitely wondered at that as well, considering they generate that for ELWs. They must have some idea of where settlements naturally pop up if that is the case though, as some of the lights do correspond to existing cities/settled areas.

In 3285, the IDA's (http://www.darksky.org/) efforts in lobbying governments worldwide finally paid off. Street lights that didn't shield the light from heading anywhere other than earthward were banned. What you're seeing are the leftovers in outlying areas that haven't yet been converted.

All those with telescopes rejoice at your new dark sky!

Cool link, that's a great project idea. With more and more people living in urban centres, it makes sense to try to reclaim the night sky for all to view. That would also explain why you can see the smaller metropolitan areas lit up and not the larger ones. So, as that line progressed, you'd slowly see the developed countries go dark and developing countries would shine brightly into the night sky - an interesting juxtoposition for sure!

Earth is supposed to be mostly left to those who didn't want or couldn't afford to leave, Mars is where it's at in Elites day, Earth is worn out, overused and abused and only really of sentimental value.

Yes, the Earth has changed a bit.

In North America the most obvious difference is that the Great Lakes have been filled in (or dried up). Also it appears that the Florida Peninsula is flooding over.

I am sure if the region was caught at dusk the city lights would offer a different layout than would be accurate today.

Each point of light indicates a Starbucks. Dark areas are desolate wastelands.

Funnily enough, that's how I think of London now, when I'm forced to visit it. Not sure whether it's the phone-zombies or the dominant vehicular life form that gives me that impression.

Some of the lit areas seem offset - like Birmingham too far west, Edinburgh too far north, and the Liverpool / Manchester splodges in the Lake District.

As for London... it relocated itself to the European mainland after Brexit.

Kinda seems like it relocated right on top of Belfast after NI secured 'special' status after Brexit :p

If only players could flip a system as important as Sol between major factions. We could have a Fedxit

What I'd like to know, is where all the orbital facilities and shipyards are. I mean, the birthplace of humanity, cradle of civilisation and all that... and there are no shipyards anywhere, churning out fleets of ships. How exactly did we leave the solar system and colonise the bubble?
