Horizons Different between horizons and elite

Hi,

I have had Elite for a year or two, and have just bought Horizons.

When I run the Elite launcher, I get options for Playing Elite and playing Elite Horizons.

Whats the difference?

Surely, if I play Horizons, I get all of Elite? I don't see the point of having the Elite option?

Is there a reason to load Elite if you have Horizons??

Thanks.

Hi archie456,

You have in essence two games - Elite Dangerous and Horizons.

Horizons requires Elite dangerous to run but allows you extra activities, the main one being crash landing on planets.

Just start up Horizons and everything will work fine.
If you start up Elite Dangerous, you wil be playing a version where you cannot access the planets to land on.

The non-horizons version has lower system requirements so you can,e.g., use that to play on a slower device if you need to. Switching games can also be used to "cheese" yourself out of situation like being stuck on a planet, since if you log out on a planet and then start the base game, you end up safe and sound in space.

I've been in a couple of jams (like stuck down a cliff face) in my SRV and this logging out (Horizons) / in / out (Elite) / in (Horizons) has saved my SRV from otherwise certain destruction! When your in an Asp with only one SRV, 10,000ly from home, you are damned glad to have this feature!

What Ian Philips said plus engineers (don't know if you can access them without horizons so if you do, stop reading). This are some weird dudes that will ask you for some stuff that you get in different locations/missions with not an specific pointer to them. But luckily for us we have www.inara.cz where you can find whatever you are looking for. This dudes seems they also love self-flagellation and they really want everybody that visit and want access their stuff to love it too so if you go for this get ready for a lot of time consuming with huge patience and a lot of cargo management, as you can't store your stuff anywhere which is the real pain and leads to the said auto-flagellation. In rest, is all fun and doable.

Maybe the next SRV we get, FD can give us a grappling hook and winch. Could make for some interesting gameplay.

It's an option our XB1 brothers and sister don't have, and it's exceedingly useful when dropped inside a planet...
