Different Fsd Classes/drives ideas

I’ve always had an idea of having different class hyper drives. What I mean by that is being able to buy different types of hyper drives that would give you different perks.
For example I’ve always had a dream of being able to jump directly into combat zones or the vicinity of stations straight out of hyperspace instead of having to fly in super cruise. I know that super cruise is a huge part of the game and I am in no way shape or form saying that I don’t love it because I do, all I am saying that it would be nice to be able to experience different styles of hyperdrives.

So further speaking of ideas: the capital class ships. I believe in the lore it says something about them having very old versions of hyper drives and how their grand mass sizes is why they leave a hole through witchspace (I’m not an elite dangerous lore nut I’m sorry if I’m wrong). My point is that it would be cool to be able to obtain the type of fsd drive and be able to obtain it’s perks such as jumping directly into a specific location rather than a nav beacon.
Now obviously our ships wouldn’t leave a hole like the capital ships do because our ships are just not massive enough to do it. Even thargoid fsd drives would be pretty awesome to obtain and be able to use it’s perks, for example traveling farther distances (if I remember correctly as to how they work).

Obviously each fsd would have its give and take. For example if you used an older class fsd, like the capital ships do, you could jump into a specific location in the system, however the trade-off could be that it’s overall jump range is lower (idk just thinking of a way to balance it). So maybe it would be something like you can jump to any location In the system except for any planet side locations (maybe a little too op, but you can jump into the planets vicinity) as long as your ship can reach the system or something like that. And obviously each one would have different animations and different balances and prices.

I know some people might say: "why would you rather have a smaller jump range?" To them I say that not everyone plays the same as everyone else and not everyone is trying to explore or move around 100+ light years. Some people like to bounty hunt or pirate around, or hell even role play. Everyone plays differently and even then the fsd’s could be swapped out for whatever fits what they are trying to do just like everything else. Anyway I think it would bring much more to the experience. The game has grown over the years and new items and gadgets have been introduced, but I feel like fsd’s have remained the same. It would be refreshing and bring something truly awesome to the game. I’ve just always felt like the most used feature (hyper jump) is the most plain. It would be nice to be able to use and experience different variations.

Some different options might shake things up a bit. I'd be up for a stealth fsd with short range, high power consumption but didn't leave wakes, for example. Some new gameplay would probably need to be added to make any changes to how FSDs work worthwhile IMO. I'm not sure we'd need anything that gives a longer jump range given that 140 ly is already possible without a jet cone boost.

Let me introduce you to Mr Period.

Thank you Cmdr Carbo for making OP readable.

Are you suggesting an FSD that drops you directly at your destination rather than the system entry point, but at the cost of reduced jump range, totally eliminating the need to ever travel anywhere in SC as long as you never really plan to leave the bubble?

For starters look up any thread asking for mini/micro/in-system jumps and you'll see a plethora of reasons why this isn't a viable option (there's a lot of them)!

Yeah, I was thinking of something similar recently. The capital ship/Thargoid style jumping directly to destination type probably will and should be kept to those ships. For one thing, I think it might require new interface. Maybe the carriers will give the players a control to such a drive to a limited degree, like the carrier's commander can tell it to jump to orbit a specific body, but doesn't have finer control with where it goes exactly.

A diametrically opposing idea would a a drive that is only capable of low wake/supercruise. Some cheap in-system NPC shuttles and orbit hoppers might prefer it. It could also be the one new players start with. One might try to give it advantages that make it attractive to more experienced players in some very specialised roles probably. I could imagine it being simpler, that makes it cheaper and more durable. As it is focused on one task, it might also be more optimised, which leads to lesser power consumption. Could also be less bothered by the mass lock factors.

All I really want is for there to be a new twist or refreshing feature for fsd drives. Doesn’t have to be exactly what I had in mind. I was just throwing out some ideas.

I just always find myself looking at the jump drive compartment and feeling like there can be potential for expansion there.

Yes exactly, I like your idea. It doesn’t necessarily be what I had in mind but just something that refereshes that area of the game or gives a new twist.
