So apparently, THIS is what travelling at FTL speeds would look like: http://www.gizmag.com/hyperspace-travel-look-like/25794/

But what this got me thinking about was how our ships in Elite basically show us the universe in a way we can relate to - a simulation of a simulation, if you will. It can't show us what we'd actually see at FLT and close to FTL speeds after all, light bends like crazy. Much like how our canopy is one big HUD showing us orbits and object locations, and simulating sounds that are taking place in vacuum, when we're travelling in-system at 100c or whatever, we're not seeing the light from the sun as it actually reaches us, but an in-ship simulated representation based on where the object actually is.
So imagine if when our canopy is blown out, we saw things over 1c in a hyperspace way like above, and below the speed of light using distortion like this

(apologies for the ancient looking video. I saw a newer one a while back, but can't find it online for the life of me)
Of course the intact part of the canopy would still be showing space the way we're used to, making navigation possible until we get out of Supercruise.
It would certainly make for a mind-bendingly funky experience
