Different game versions?

Hello, commanders! I'm new at game and have some questions about launcher. We have option to play Elite Dangerous, and Elite Dangerous: Horizons, yes? Why we need to play only ED, if we have ED:Horizons? Theoretically, why tf i would need this option?

And i'm saving money to pre-order Odyssey. Is it going to be a 3-variant choise between clean game, Horizons and Odyssey? 'Cause i want to play both the dlc's at the same time. Maybe someone knows how is it going to be?

If, for example, you get your SRV stuck while on a planet, log out then log back in without Horizons. Puts you back in your ship in orbit. Then relog back into Horizons.

As @Speedcuffs says, it's useful for certain recoveries. However as Horizons is included for all now, that't really the base games only use (and even those scenarios are an artefact of the implementation). At some point the non horizons could be removed from the launcher (no info that I know of on that from FDev if that will happen or when).

One would expecct that once Odyssey is released, there wil be at least Odyssey and Horizons options.

Okay, thank u. That would be great, if launcher had option to play both dlc's.

Just to clear up, if you launch Horizons you are playing both Horizons and the Original non-Horizons version, so you are indeed playing both, you can't actually play Horizons without also having the original launched. When Odyssey comes out if you purchase it you will be running all three when you launch Odyssey as they are all rolled into Odyssey. So it's not a position of having the option to play both DLC's, the latest version will automatically do that for all previous DLC's.

Another use for the Non-Horizons log in is the refuelling of a ship which is landed on a planet.

As a Fuel Transfer limpet requires clearance beneath the ship being rescued (50m-100m) in order to access the fuel transfer port, you can't refuel a ship landed (in the normal way :) ) on a planet. For PC players, currently Fuel Rats can ask for a commander to log into Non Horizons, to get them on orbit where they can be rescued.

Not its only function. The base game can also run on systems that wouldn't ordinarily be able to run Horizons. You could play the base game on the go with low end graphics such as (some) older integrated Intel chips, useful if you are on the go and only have the "work" laptop with you. Obviously you wouldn't get planetary landings, though you can still land on carriers (I think) and any previously engineered equipment will still be attached (you just can't engineer anything new).
